Oh my gosh...My best friend is in San Francisco at a work conference. I just texted her but it's very early there, like 2:40 am. Is this a real tsunami warning?

Yes...A phone call may be the better option.

I just left a message. I don't know what hotel she's at. Would they be aware and sounding the alarms?

I'm trying to wake a few friends up and give them a warning.

So far no one is answering their phones, texts, or FB messages.

San Fran has a little bit of time to spare. I just looked at the map they’re showing and it’s 6-9 hours estimated from there. Still urgent - but I’m just trying to provide a tad of anxiety relief. I know you must be worried. a reply to: texasgirl

Here's a map of the tsunami impact... it doesn't state the size, but it gives an estimated time when the waves will start hitting the various coastal areas:

Weather Channel now reporting it as a 7.9. Still pretty bad, imo

ETA - someone beat me to it. I saw that there were 2 smaller ones, but the way I read it was that they hit just before the 7.9. Are those actually aftershocks? Or did I read it right?

Eta#2 - now showing one before, so not sure what happened. Guessing that they had one of the aftershocks listed incorrectly.

I need coffee...

5.0 aftershock just hit.

Going to be unstable for a while.

Just hope it doesn't shake up the Juan de Fuca plate.

It was supposed to hit Kodiak ten minutes ago, but news is hard to find about it. Seward right about now.

Third alert.

Still nothing about Kodiak or other towns that may have been hit already, but the warning is still active.

Fingers crossed for my neighbors.

This is bad.

Everyone is sleeping in their beds right now and the tsunami is expected to hit the Alaskan and BC coastlines within the next 2 to 3 hours.

For those of you who know anyone who lives on those coastlines, pick up the phone and call them if you can...

Wake them up so they have enough time to get to higher ground, we have no idea right now how bad the waves are going to be !

Everybody in Kodiak has been evacuated to higher ground, the sirens went off and alot of people got messages about the tsunami.

Thank you. I'm seeing that it's downgraded to 7.9 and that it's a tsunami watch in the SF area. Poor Alaska and BC, though. Trying to get out of the way in the snow!

I've heard the water got sucked out of the channel and this was about 15 or so minutes ago. I dont think any radio stations up here have even reported it, not even the tv stations.
