Curious...has anyone here tried closing their Facebook account? I'm wondering if they make you got through a bunch of crap if you want to get rid of your account. Or if one is even allowed to close their account.

Yeah it is a fairly easy process. But they do have a bunch of different deactivation options. Like a 'I only want to take a break, I will be back' through to a 'no, get me the # out of here totally'

They do try to make you answer some questions about why you are leaving. Usual check some boxes or enter text into a box if your reasons are 'other'

In saying that though, even with the most complete account deactivation. If you change your mind and use the same email etc to sign back up, your account will be exactly as you left it, photos, posts and all.
Unless you go through and manually delete everything.
But even then FB will still have that stuff stored somewhere even though it appears gone.
Just in case they need to sell it to thr NSA, FBI or CIA or hand it to the police.

But yeah simple answer. Pretty easy to leave the platform.

I may try my cat's photo. Make it official . Make sure the pic shows day, date, and time.
If they deny , I will claim feline discrimination.
So , if they require a photo of you , how do they know it is you ?
Appears as if Facebook is on the cutting edge of the Idiocy technology field.

They can if they choose to ask for more ID like a drivers license. I have experienced that kind of request before from them while trying to make an account under an alias and that was years ago.
That was an account with a realistic human sounding name like for example 'Fred Anderson', while another account name, say 'Flubber Dubwubdub', required no checks at all.

I have several accounts on the platform, each one logged into a different browser. (I'm a web designer as part of my trade so I need every browser available for testing)
Each account seems to have different features, and different security requirements.
Some have forced phone authentication, some have only needed an email.
Facebook seems to have this odd habit of not rolling out new functions over their complete network across all accounts. It's kind of bizarre.

But hey, this is a site where I see accounts post gay porn and pedophilia and not get touched from being reported, but see other accounts shut down in a heart beat for posting a picture of a clothed sexy woman on their feed.
You can make a page supporting ISIS, but you'll be shut down for making an anti-military page/group.
Consistency is not that companies strong point.
All I know is Zuckerberg seems to be really scared of naked... or semi naked women. But naked and sexualised males are perfectly fine.....

Really is the weirdest site I have ever seen.
edit on 31-12-2017 by AtomicKangaroo because: typos as usual. probably more in there lol.

I just have to say how incredibly creepy I find Facebook to be. It is like an AI trying to get you to answer more and more questions for some evil entity. It follows your location, your searches and even your thoughts.

I don’t know why any of you folks on ATS use it...I would PAY someone to manage a business page for me before I would make an account.

I've made like 5 profiles over the last month and used pictures of everyone from Zoidberg to Pinhead and haven't had any issues like you described.

WTF man I'm just trying to make a account setup for my new site film whatever project.

The little monster makes you confirm via phone FINE.

Recently I went and reserved "The Darkest Patterns" everywhere I could think.

I go to log into Facedoosh the other night to get started making it alive.

It wouldn't let me log in.

Well not without uploading my FACE.

I really tried to circumnavigate the thing but it doesn't give you much.

Alright then damnit...

Of course I dont do photos. Its in my DNA I'm a true anti-Big Brother creature. There's only a few digital photos of me anywhere. I actually keep tape over my computer phones cameras (aluminum foil tape works best).

So naturally I open up my most easy to click on meme folder and found that one first that had a pretty clear face. Actually I tried the Big Brother face from 1984 (1984), but it wouldnt accept it.

Then for two days it just gives me this BS:

I just figured it wanted some kind of I'm not a robot confirmation maybe, but now if someone is actually going to look at it great there goes my account. But it came back on a little while ago, let me login, upload my themed profile picture, banner I was trying to upload, and then it shifts me back into that damn upload FACE prompt again.

F it I'll give them a proper face this time

And now we're back to this:

Oh grow up. If you don't like FB, don't use it. Meanwhile, it's sad that it's come to this, but with millions of fake accounts out there (either for political purposes, harassment/trolling, or catfishing), this is what's needed to clean things up a bit. It isn't perfect, but it's better.

You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

Just to get my phone running, I even have to register an email address with google.

A bit of off-topic first.
I assume Your phone is on Android OS.
There's a ton of custom ROMs, which don't require Google apps to be installed.
Aaand, apparently, it is possible to install Android on Apple devices as well. Don't know why anyone would want an Apple device in the first place, though.

Ok, back on topic. This is actually the first time I read, that FB needs/requires a photo? Had my profile without a pic for a long time and didn't have any problems. Even now my pics are deliberately edited to make my face obscure.

Yeah really! What's everybody complaining about?
All they want is help us, and improve our lives.
Will we not welcome our overlord benefactors?

Congratulations. You have just described 98% of social media sites. Totally worthless. Folks pour out their entire lives on these sites (and spend most of it posting therein) . Why ? No relatively sane person can answer that question.

why? Herd mentality. Desire to fit in. Peer pressure to conform.

If enough people started shoving pineapples up their noses, I guarantee it would be trending in a month and everyone would be doing it.
Just look at the moronic challenges we saw like planking. Get a million views on youtube, and within a week there will be a billion copy cats.

Even as adults, nobody wants to be the kid on the lowest rung of the social ladder or picked last for the team, even if it means sacrificing their morals and self esteem to do so.

Very few of us are able to go against the flow. Think for, and remain, ourselves.
Kind of sad. But as is becoming my mantra on ATS, 95% of humans are idiots. I genuinely believe this.

So I realized I had signed up with my phone, so signed up again with my TDP email. Got int, got to adding friends from some big popular accounts to start bringing the thing to life. It gave me that "you should only add people you know" warning then it cut me off and brought me to the FACE verify thing. Back to the situation in the OP.

So here's my hail mary:

Through the blind acceptance of the masses, we will eventually be required to cooperate with privacy invading technology. The majority of people are just too optimistic about giving every detail of their life to corporations and government. It's all great technology progress until it backfires one day and mr control freak x comes along.
