Greetings-

Remember the 3 year old who got shot in His face whilst on a walk w/His Mother in 2016? He shot Himself after finding a handgun upstairs between some mattresses. The gun's serial numbers have been removed. The guns suspected owner, Kevin Collins, 25 was arrested on a few different charges.

This is the kid who was out walking the streets w/His mother and some other kids at 9 p.m. Maybe a hot night because it was June?

A 5-year-old boy who was struck in the face last year by a stray bullet fired during a drive-by shooting accidentally shot himself in the hand this week with a gun his father had obtained illegally, Chicago police said Wednesday.

Kavan Collins found the loaded, uncased gun under a mattress in an upstairs bedroom and shot himself Tuesday evening in the finger, police said.

The boy's father, Kevin Collins, was arrested late Wednesday on several felony gun charges and six misdemeanor counts of child endangerment. Police said the 25-year-old convicted felon's gun had a defaced serial number — something that is commonly done to illegal guns to make them more difficult to trace.

We need a government program to provide proper gun training to people living in the city.

What do you think of hiding guns from kids as opposed to letting them handle them under adult supervision?

I know when I was a kid, I was told not to touch dads guns in the closet. For kids thats a dare . Kids are curious with any forbidden thing. Trying to hide guns from kids is like trying to hide Christmas presents.

They will wait till you're not around and go look. If a kid is allowed to touch the firearm while supervised, taught how dangerous it is, having their curiosity satisfied is better than ignoring it.

imo

CHICAGO – A 5-year-old boy who was struck in the face last year by a stray bullet fired during a drive-by shooting accidentally shot himself in the hand this week with a gun his father had obtained illegally, Chicago police said Wednesday.

Collins is expected to appear in bond court on Thursday.

The child was listed in good condition at Comer Children's Hospital — the same hospital the boy was taken to in June 2016 when he was shot in the face as he and his mother walked down the street on the city's South Side.

The boy's mother, D'Antignay Brashear, told The Associated Press last year that she was holding the boy's hand when she heard the sound of gunfire and looked down to see a bullet had fractured her son's jaw and shattered some teeth before it went out his other cheek.

"I don't know how to explain it to him," the mother told the AP for a story last July about children who are victims of Chicago's gun violence. "How do you tell a kid, 'Oh, you got shot.'"

Police said a 28-year-old woman inside a residence was also struck in the shooting, which happened when someone fired from a passing vehicle. Police said neither the woman nor Kavan were the intended target.

So basically the kid's father is a thug. The mother a hood rat. This kid will complete the cycle by the time he is 13.

Regarding gun safety, my father was a cop. He used to clean his service weapon in the den watching TV. When I was around 7 or 8, he put me on his lap and basically let me handle his weapon (unloaded of course). He showed me how it worked, took it apart, etc.

My mother was livid. However, his thinking was simply that he wanted to "get rid of any curiosity". After that, I never once had a desire to "play" with a gun. I knew it was dangerous and how to safely put it away (he often kept it out in easy reach). It was always loaded.

My parent's closet was full of shot guns and rifles too. I knew where all the shells were stored as well.

For me, the gun was just a tool. Like a hammer.

I firmly believe in teaching kids early how to handle firearms safely. It gets rid of any urge to play with them imho. I grew up in the south and most of my friends had similar experiences with firearms. I do recall a few friends who didn't get any exposure to firearms who did in fact find their parent's firearms and play with them thinking it was cool.

The only thing that should be underneath a dads matress should be porno magazines.

In that neighborhood, a firearm for self defense at hand and loaded, is essential. No place more vulnerable than where you sleep.

Oh no this poor little baby

1. Let's get him out of Chicago as he apparently has awful luck there
2. Let's adopt him into a home where guns are legally secured and out of reach or possession of children, or where they aren't at all.

I bet his parents feel like effin trash

How about instead of "adding" programs We start to 'delete' the ones that no longer work?? I'm not a "Gun Nu... Enthusiast" but if I'm not mistaken, Chicago has great pizza and the Nation's strictest gun laws?

Maybe the Victim-Shooter was rummaging about looking to see if He was getting any presents for Jesus' Naming Day?

I agree that if a firearm is present in the home, EVERY occupant of said dwelling should be taught both the nomenclature of any gun(s) but also be proficient in loading/unloading and be able to operate them.

Did you miss the serials ground off bit?

I'm sure no lock or safety even on.

You don't have one of those for home protection. Don't make it sound noble

And after reading the "Male representative's" prior arrest record, one could opine that He was squarely "In The Game" and being such, 'rules don't apply' as they don't abide by the law. Now here is a "Male rep." who resides in a dwelling where a child has already been a victim of 'gun violence' so what does He do? Hides a gadget where the kid finds it.

I was well trained in gun safety and marksmanship at a very young age.
Same with every other kid in the family.
There have been no accidents or crimes committed.
Hiding guns from kids who have not been educated on their dangers and how to properly handle one is a recipe for disaster.

just what we need another government program *sarcasm* great lets teach these future over medicated, over diagnosed, over prescribed, prozac and anti depressant taking kids how to handle a gun so that way they can shoot up the school when they grow up. *sarcasm* how about a government program teaching people how to be a decent human being? oh wait that would be the parents, family, neighborhood, societies job.

A serial number doesn't save your life. If someone breaks in and tires to kill your wife and child, who cares whether a firearm is legally registered or not?

Oh, the same people that want to prevent him from defending himself in the first place, the Law.

Because its probably really hard to get one legally in that neighbor hood, and after they already shot his child, and Chicago having the strictest gun control , what choice does he have?

Buy an illegal firearm, or die...
