So.California- Ventura, Santa Paula and San Bernardino

Three days of dry windy conditions and downed power
lines have become a nightmare for firefighters.
Amid ongoing massive evacuations and 62 mph gusts
in tomorrows forcast.

In one case fire jumped the PCH and stoemed a beach
community. None are close to being contained'

I was hoping somebody would start a thread on this. You'd be wise to add 2017 to your thread title though. We get a "California is Burning Up" thread every winter. Hard to search for a particular one when they all are worded so generically.

BTW... Do you think President Trump will declare Southern California a "disaster" area, even though much of the state was a disaster before this week?

Good idea and I'm really used to the fire season but this is
horrific.

The sepulveda pass is on fire too near the getty museum and the skirball cultural center.

The getty has a collection of van Goghs renoir gougan (sp)and monets that could be at risk of smoke damage.

Up to last week i used to live at the base of the sepulveda pass. Looks like i had good timing to get out of los angeles when i did last week.

Respect, I was wondering when this thread would show up and I'm glad I got in before all the gloating and happy dances show up. Pretty sure at least one person will say its all California's fault for letting Zacate or go, or being Libtards or some such nonsense.

Anyway, here is a useful link to track this desturction. California Fire Map

Anytime....and mad props to the firefighters on this one. Balls of steel boys and girls, balls of steel.

For the tech friendly and sci fi lovers, check this out....

Popsci

Where there’s smoke, there should be firefighting robots. At least ,that’s the aim of the humanoid Shipboard Autonomous Firefighting Robot (SAFFiR, yes, pronounced “safer”) in development by the Office of Naval Research. The Navy demonstrated the robot last winter, and it was one of the competitors at DARPA’s robotics grand challenge last summer. To help SAFFiR walk a little better, the Navy just awarded a $600,000 grant to Worcester Polytechnic Institute to teach the robots how to walk better.

And this from Howe

and Lockheed

This is the kinda # that Bezos should donate his billions too.

I gotta say yes.

What's really freaking me out is that the already strong winds are being accelerated by the fire to over 80mph. A Category 1 Hurricane is 75mph.

Neat.
For a building...which covers maybe an acre (or two, for a big one). With a hydrant nearby.

Are most of Southern California fires started by man or by nature (lightning)?
