Hey all,

I am fascinated with space exploration and think we are fortunate that the majority of us will be around to hopefully see a man or woman walk on Mars - but my topic is about our moon.

I was watching some videos on youtube from the channel I am sure you have all heard of "SecureTeam". Granted, an awful lot of the content is *meh* but some of it is a good watch. The most recent video about the moon, whilst not particularly interesting in it's self, prompted me to have a look at the photos the crew took whilst they were on the surface.

In more than a couple of photos there is a red (I am going to say flag) in the far background behind them, certainly not a photography blip as it stays static across a few photos in relation to the camera panning.

I want to know if anyone has seen this before and if there is an explanation for it from NASA or another source. My immediate thought was perhaps it is from prior Apollo missions but just seems a little odd. Here is a link to the source which is NASA - I wasnt sure how to upload my own close ups but I recommend downloading and zooming in. It is to the right on the horizon.

Holy cow you have a good eye.

Yes I see it. On earth I would say a radio tower from a great distance.

Again good eye.

Another place that will be off limits to any rovers that are running around up there.

I have seen images where there appears to be some ET buildings or ships in the background and the black area wasn't actually that black to begin with. Also, you would imagine being in space you would see stars or galaxies way better out there without a cloud or pollution in the atmosphere, right?

Anyways....maybe you can analyze this video too. Let me know what you find

Russia or China beat us to the moon

But if it were a building/tower of some sort...why RED?????

Well.
That's odd.

Was it put there by the astronauts?

It looks like a reflector on a post. Like you get by roads and stuff.

I looked at the pictures before I read your post and picked out exactly what you were talking about so it does look out of place.

My initial thought was previous Apollo mission related debris or something. But what would be that prominent on the horizon? It would have to be pretty big, but it is difficult to assume distance with the images.

S and F, while I can offer no explanation I can at least say I 100% can see what you have stated and they are photos with A reputable source, over to the mighty minds of ATS

Looking forward to see this topic develop, Great find.

Thank you :-) - I was just curious, I knew about this forum so signed up quickly to get opinions on it. But as you say, it is directly from the source that took the images. Wonder if they forgot to delete these ones haha

Could also be ALSEP equipment laid out by the crew...

Could be but would they really deploy that far away from the lander?

Their mission was to explore the moon...I don't see them having a pow wow around the lander the entire trip. Question would be how long would their O2 tanks last for and could they make the trip way out there and come back in time?

Do we know what day the pic was taken and the day they laid out the equipment?

I do not see anything in their stated equipment that looks like the red light in the distance in all three pics.

The 3 images are in sequence and labeled as

AS16-107-17437HR
AS16-107-17438HR
AS16-107-17439HR

I believe the index means Apollo 16 therefore dates around 19th to 24th of April 1972, but I have limited knowledge after that.

very cool find, thanks for sharing

whatever that object may be, its got a bit of height to it ... the red isn't at ground level

I find myself pondering, is it producing the red light or reflecting it ?

Good question. I guess if it is something that reflects light then it could be reflecting the sun and we are only seeing the red light. But again, what could be that big that could reflect light with that sharpness?

The images are taken uphill looking towards the ALSEP site.

In this image

www.hq.nasa.gov...

you can see an orange marker on top of a pole - here's a close up:

I believe that's what you're seeing there.

e2a: It's the geophone equipment

Possibly but the sequence is wrong - if the sequence in the photos are correct then the ALSEP wouldnt have been deployed at the point the photos, in my post, were taken.

ALSEP installation and documentation - 18345-82
Photos in question - 17437-39
