He thought he saw a deer and fired his pistol. Now his neighbor is dead.

This is definitely strange. 200 yards with a pistol makes no sense, unless he was drunk or just stupid. Or maybe he just wanted to "scare" the deer, as some people I've known have done. I agree with others that you don't aim or shoot unless you A) know definitely what you're aiming at and B) intend to shoot it.

That said, something similar happened with my late best friend: he and his brother went hunting years ago (at dusk/night) and his brother ended up shooting him—killing him—with a single shot to the head with a .223 (which had a scope).

They prosecuted for murder.

As far as additional details, I won't go into those.

The shooter clearly looks insane. 200 yards and a deer deez.

He murdered that woman intentionally, you can see the crazy in his eyes.

I would have arrested him.

There isn't possibly any intent here.

No one tries to shoot someone at 200 yards with only a handgun. Even if you tried, you'd most likely miss. It is extremely unlikely his round would connect with anyone, which is what makes this so surprising to those of us familiar with firearms and how they work.

There is no doubt he violated rules of gun safety though, so he gets no defense from me.

He murdered her on purpose no way he took a shot 200 yards with a pistol, he was much closer I think he meant to scare her off thinking it was just somone in the woods. I think he realized it was the neighbor when he managed to hit her. But there is no way he could have mistakenly thought she was a deer..

He say he shot from 200, he could be lying. Definitely too stupid to handle fire arms.

Looked up some info but won't post details since it is frowned upon here.

Here is google map where I indicate roughly the two addresses. Both properties are listed at 4 acres. Ignore the red marker.

The field "behind" her house is quite afar away from his place. Maybe she walked far north near him. Also they are on different sides of the road. Did she crossed the road? Was he was on a different property?

I wonder if the news will look farther into this with those details.

What do I think?

The dude is an idiot of the first order.

Know the background behind your target. Be sure of your target. No "maybe's" or "I thought" allowed.

A bit of a tangent...I saw on one of those shows filming the police a call for a man who was shot.

Turns out he shot his hand while cleaning his hand gun. Another twist was he was watching a youtube on cleaning a fire arm when he did it. Guess he didn't get to the unload it first part in the video.

Ya'll disgust me.

Screaming for someone to go to prison for a mistake / accident / etc.

It's like saying you should be fired from your jobs for spelling mistakes.

# happens, this I know. The actual legal / law system will determine if he should be charged.

Rather then yelling for him to just go to prison, perhaps there is a better course of action for your emotional needs, like sending donations to her widow?

He should go to prison. Not saying he should get a life sentence but he should definitely do a little time for his stupidity. Sadly you equating a spelling mistake to this victims accidental killing was a horrible analogy and only served to dishonor the seriousness of the situation with your almost humorous and very distasteful comparison.

That is what I do not, honestly, understand. So many reports of people cleaning guns that go off and shoot someone.

WTF would—HTF do—you clean a loaded gun?? Or are you just stupid, in which case you probably should not own one.

Exactly. Not enough respect for a deadly weapon to not check it. Who would not think it isn't cleaned while loaded.

I tend to check twice, but that just me being very careful.

It wouldn't have happened - if gun owners were required to take and pass a safety test and had to renew their 'license' for time to time for each weapon owned. Just like the registration of a car and the license to drive a car requires.

Because we never see car accidents, drunk drivers, distracted drivers, and general asshats in vehicles registered with the state while possessing valid state issued driver's licenses in their wallets...

People screw up, it's what we do. Miles of red tape won't change that. Sometimes heinous # happens and that's part of life. It's why we have culpability laws and legal mandates requiring people to take responsibility for their individual FUBARs.

The odd thing in the news story is that the shooting happened 40 minutes after sunset? Isn't that pretty much night at that point? He didn't just shoot her he shot her in the dark. That's cockeyed for sure.

There it is, guns aren't the problem, stupid people with guns are the problem.
