KRATOS demonstrated two UTAP-22s working with a single AV-8B Harrier that were controlled by the same Harrier. In many ways this feels a lot like the
Loyal Wingman tech demos. However, it ought to be remembered that KRATOS is under contract to develop the attritable semi stealthy UCAVs. If
successful, then the new UAVs could be used in swarms, being less than 1/20th the cost of an F-35. I have doubts the UTAP-22 will be bought by many,
if any, but it is looking like a great tool to develop the software for controlling swarms of the newer UCAVs.
I have to wonder if in 2030, we see the F-16s being salvaged and turned into QF-16s as an interim measure while the newer swarming UCAVs are being
procured.
Harriers aren't going anywhere for awhile yet. They're looking at 2030 now to retire the last one, due to the issues with the F-18s and getting the
F-35s stood up.
