Kinda hard to take care of your own people when you spend over half a trillion per year on killing people overseas. We also have the largest debt of any other country by far.

I could care less where it comes from. A drop in the bucket compared to what goes to defense and other things.

I can sure use it. And to those who don't really need it well hopefully will boost the economy.
That's the spirit, who cares where it comes from as long as I don't have to pay for it!

Sigh....

How much is Scotland's Defense Budget? What "other things " will you get rid of for UBI? Are they enough to pay for UBI?

When that happens, IMF turns your community into a poor crime ridden area like what they did to Africa.

The U.S. government is so inefficient that it would have to raise taxes $1,000 a month, to give every American $500 a month.

That is an extremely generous estimate.

Here in Belgium a single person without a job gets 870 Euro "living wage" a month.
That's about 1000 $

That would be funny if it weren't true...since it is though, that just makes it sad.

Something like that?

Don't tax the creation or operating costs of businesses.... just the end products. Maintain MSRP on everything.

This is just rehashing welfare. A bit of a con really. Certainly a con for the UK tax payer who will need to foot the bill for this "money for nothing to the Scots" silliness when it all goes pear shaped. Scotland is broke and propped up by the UK,but the nationalists don't care.

Don't quote me on this, but aren't immigrants void of paying taxes for the first 7 years?

Can't see how it would be possible in Scotland as the Scottish parliament has very limited control over welfare and taxation.

UBI schemes only make sense as part of an overall change in tax and spending.

I believe you're referring to the public oil profit-sharing fund payments which are a few thousand dollars per year.
Mostly you have to reside there for at least an entire year to get any money.
There may be another plan in place that you're referrjng to...

It's to do with mineral rights, it is a dividend, and it ranges from $150 to $2000 per year. Not nearly like what Scotland is doing.

Edit: Here's an Alaska gov fact sheet: Facts
As an aside, when I Googled for this I saw their 2014 payment was $1400, so a little over $100 per month, paid once a year.

There's another name for Universal Income, it's called welfare.

I think it would be more acceptable if people are required to do community service to get Universal Income as a form of contributing to society.

A job guarantee scheme would be a much better option than a UBI.

However as per my post above would be difficult to implement without full control of taxation and spending.
