Could he actually be suicidal? What do we really know about his true state of mind? It seems as if he has been trying repeatedly to force the U.S. or anybody really to destroy his country and him along with it and since that hasn't happened (perhaps to his amazement) he has to keep ratcheting up his threats.
What say you ATSers?

The rule that a countries military does not attack the leader needs to be ignored in the case of NK. Actually, it needs to be ignored always. If world leaders had to worry about getting killed, they would not start so many wars.

Goad

Taunt

It has worked very well for him and his family in the past. It's not working now, so the rhetoric is stepping up a notch. American media is happy to latch on and create a narrative to up their views.

It sounds like he is doing it. Kim knows that if there is a new war in Korea, the economy will go even further downhill thanks to the destruction of South Korea and Japan and thus triggering the inevitable economic collapse that will also cripple the US.

In addition, there is a possibility he might have his own Samson Option where if he were to go down, he will take down his enemies with him.

Either way, Kim finally completes his and his predecessors' goal of causing maximum damage to the US.

I dont think so. I think the guy has what he probably sees as an impenetrable underground fortress where he will survive for 50 more years. That is what makes him a little scary to me.

Kim grew up most likely being taught about the Korean War. During that "war" we (Americans) got our a*ses whooped. It didn't have anything to do with anything except sheer man power, and luck, on their side. Technology was definitely a problem as well, where our boys were storming in with nothing but Garands and other M1 models.

So, I believe he honestly thinks he could win in a ground war against the United States and its allies. Or he just believes that his technology kept the pace with the "western" world.

There is an odd parallel here to the case of Saddam Hussein.
The second Iraq war was based on the claim that he had weapons of mass destruction. The retrospective conclusion was that he didn't have them. Therefore he could have avoided destruction by allowing inspectors to discover the fact. So why didn't he? His refusal was postively inviting attack.
If Saddam was on a suicide mission, it could have been in the interests of helping to rally the Muslim world against America, which has been the long-term effect.
If Kim had been a Muslim, it would be easier to attribute the same motive.
Obviosly these comments are "grey area" or even "skunk works" speculations.

I think it’s actually quite the opposite. They’re minding their own business and the U.S. keeps poking them with a stick. The U.S. is attempting to make them defend themselves and the US will call them the aggressor.

Typical bully behavior.

The guy's been raised since infancy in the belief he is entitled to lead and the best human in NK. Murder has always been one of the choices he has. 10 years old with a finger that could point to someone and have them tortured or worse. Basically, his ego has been on steroids since he was pissing his diapers.

He's a fat Asian Cartman having a tantrum.

Kim Jong Un is a fruitcake - he's away with the fairies. Trump needs to stop baiting him.

At the end of the day NK may be a festering wart on a bloated pimple on the arse end of the world BUT they can still cause a lot of suffering even beyond there borders, Un needs to go but China should be the one's to deal with that in the interests of peace in the region as it would also benefit them to get a grip on the little tyrant.

NK is the only one actually THREATENING to use there nuclear weapon's in aggression, no other country even in the cold war did that, there weapon's were only to be used in retaliatory action against anyone that used a nuke against them.

NK is therefore insane, led by a fat pimple of a tyrant and threatening the US every time they get the chance.

A nuclear strike on Korea would be harmful to all nation's around them BUT the US can not let NK continually threaten to strike them so it will inevitably come to a war, a military action against North Korea would likely not get to there arsenal so only a full scale attack would and that would then escalate sparking WW3, hey at least the fat little bast463 is going out with a bang eh!, of course his name will be cursed by the survivor's for at least a thousand years.

I think this is perhaps the wrong way to think of it.

America is not the police agency of the planet, and if it thinks it is, its leaders need castrating and its military banning from operating outside its own borders, for thirty years, just to remind them of their place.

Do you have your own news outlet or something? Nobody cares about NK until they do something stupid like launch a rocket over Japan or test a Nuke they aren't supposed to have. And even then, it's just mean words, and ...sanctions!

They have nothing anyone needs, so all they have to do is STFU and they will be left alone. But Kimmy and Donald like to see who sounds tougher.

You are entitled to your view, however wrong it may be.

But we kind of are. Who else has a blue water navy capable of patrolling the world's oceans?

Nothing like taking the entire population of North Korea with him! Kim represents the clear kind of evil that keeps the entire world in fear. In my opinion, leaders, government and religious ideology all over the world are part of that evil. They all control and create the instability, fear, terror and wars humanity has experienced throughout the centuries.

Capability is not the relevant factor.

Simply put, if America is the only nation capable of policing the worlds oceans, then they MUST go unpoliced. Rather that, than land more power in the hands of the only national government more Orwellian and corrupt than that of my own country.

Right. Good luck with that.

When you have Somali-Style Pirates 2.0 in more places than east Africa it will be real fun trying to conduct trans-oceanic trade.

Nothing anyone needs? They have vast resourses of precious metals and rare earth minerals. Over 200 metals spread over 80 percent of the country. About half of the chinese companies doing business with NK are mining businesses. I'm sure we would like to have some sort of control over those resourses.

Which will be a great motivator for some nation with a less appalling track record on committing acts of espionage, assassination, and economic destabilisation, against nations it would like to have the resources of, to build a navy capable of filling the gap.

Regardless of how many wolves there are at the door, a fox guarding a hen house is not the way to go.
