Efforts by Madrid to stop a Catalonia independence vote, currently slated for October 1st, seem to be growing more hostile by the day. Earlier this week Spanish police seized control of Catalonia’s finances, seeking to ensure that separatist politicians could not spend further public funds on the referendum, and conducted raids across Catalonia to confiscate ballots and campaign materials from printing shops and delivery companies.

Now, as the New York Times notes this morning, Spanish police have detained 14 people during operations conducted yesterday which included the secretary general of economic affairs, Josep Maria Jové.

Spain is dropping the hammer on Catalonia.

Madrid is not happy with Catalonia. Whooo boy are they not happy. In addition to the actions I quoted above, they've recently parked a cruise ship in Barcelona's harbor to house an army of 16,000 riot police !!!

It looks like things are going to get pretty ugly.

Thank you for the political news updates from Spain. I know that there's some amount of political turmoil in that part of the world. Thanks for keeping us updated with Spain's news, as I am thinking about touring there this year or next.

Straight from the U.S. manual; the only kind of "democracy" is our kind of "democracy", it's a contradictory type of murderous stupid

Long live the spirit of Simón Bolívar

Catalonia accounts for 20% of Spain's GDP, and has most of their manufacturing.

Spanish gov. does NOT want them to secede.. probably ready to employ Martial Law.

Spanish Civil War looming?

I heard the Trump Administration just gave the Commerce Dept. greenlight for Gun Manufacturers to sell overseas... interesting wouldn't ya say?

So they have no right to a referendum on their future? They won't be allowed to break away? Doesn't seem very "Modern European" to even block the vote? Screw self determination, the EU saw what happens when you actually let the citizens of a land vote.

The state will always act to protect its own power. That's why California will never secede, no matter how much noise retarded celebs make, and no matter how much the rest of us wish they would secede. Because it's not in the state's interests to allow it.

You only have to look at Spain's attitude to Gibraltar to see what kind of democracy the Spanish politicians want!!

Its part of Spain. If people arent happy with the borders start a war over it. Oh wait, it has been tried and countless generations lost their best and brightest leaving Europe a shell of itself in every era that followed any prosperity.

They arent being bothered. They are just trying to start chaos that a few can profit from.

Every single people should then disolve their countries and be smaller easily conquered, depopulated areas. Oh wait....yeah.

Ok, so you want to disrupt the delicate balance that is modern borders, that keeps ethnic and cultural differences as marginal factors of a whole.

If a modern western European country loses any land or holdings we will have war.

This is nonsense. They arent under foreign rule that ruins their lives. This is tempting fate and I wish they would. I personally want to end all forms of centralized government. I just know that means that our world will end and favor the new matrix.

The new world will be dark and harsh for the first 100 years or so. That is if it is even viable and able to survive itself and new enemies.

No. You dont ask to leave a powerful government over you. You leave if you can. This is fantasy and BS.

In a related story Generalissimo Fransisco is still dead!

This Catalonian situation has been brewing in Spain since before that statement was "news".

To me it seems more cultural than political and the election seeks acknowledgement of the regions unique culture.

Then again, what do I know...

But it's what the people want that's important. You can't dominate another people, it doesn't work. We Brits let all our Empire have self determination, indeed even our own iland has at times been offered independence to other peoples like the Scots. If the minority wants to go their own way then good on them. It's their lives and none of anyone elses business.

They have that.

They use their language, revived pagan gods, openly criticize the government and everyone /everything else in their country, burn national symbols and unifying history, administer their own law, taxes and so on. Spain has autonomy for regions that want it as set in their constitution.

Cataluña had a hand in that constitution.

I say if they will pretend that foreign factors arent involved, then Madrid should pretend not to care, but take action regardless like they have.

The people want to pay less taxes, not go to war, and not be told HOW to live. Thats true everywhere.

This is not that. They had that. This is "Screw Madrid".

Spaniards are too passionate for their own good. Its good in times of struggle, but detrimental in times of peace.

Maybe Spain should keep the Catalns zone in Spain. Like you say everything getting fragmented leads to war. Seems like a bad business move if they let it go too with so much of Spains manufacturing being based there. We got the same issue here with the Scots. We gave the Scots their own parliament and a whole host of other powers but a good half of them still wants more. Makes you wonder if its worth giving them any powers at all as it usually sets a snowball rolling.

I can remember when Basque separatists kept bombing parts of Spain, I see that's died out, now the Spanish have islamists to contend with, Madrid does not want any more upsets.

Luckily Gibraltar is going nowhere near the rule of Madrid ever. Its monkeys would never allow it plus we need one safe place in Iberia and north africa where Sephardics can always feel safe and go and retreat to. Like an Israel on the western side of the med.

Last time i checked, The Yanks, the Irish, the south african boers asked the empire if they could leave by shooting the british army in the face. The rest britain had to leave before they got strung up.

ps, Go Catalan.

This from the current fascist-in-chief:

“Stop this escalation of radicalism and disobedience once and for all,” Mariano Rajoy said in a televised statement on Wednesday night as protesters remained in the centre of the city after a day-long demonstration. www.theguardian.com...

'You must obey!!!!'

What are these Catalans? Unruly children? Dogs? Who is this Rajoy? Big Daddy? FFS!!!!

They are an educated electorate!
