Hi all, my daughter took this picture today (9/16) and asked if I knew what this weird shadow is, I have know idea so I thought I would throw it here to see what others have to say. Picture taken at 08:54 on Butte Mountain Rd in Jackson Ca, and she is not sure of the direction she was facing.

The contrail is casting its shadow on the cloud deck.

Which way is the sun in the pic?

Ahhh... and the reason it looks like it's in front of the aircraft is because of the suns angle... yes?

That's why I ask her what direction she was facing and she didn't know.

Indeed.
It doesn't always work that way.

The shadows on the ground are helpful.

living in the flight path to London heathrow (LHR) and also working in its vicinity i often see shadows
like this one from jets in the airspace above where aircraft are passing through or preparing for decent
into LHR's approach.

it is a busy sector and when conditions are right all sorts of patterns and shadows are created would make great
image fodder for the chem trail proponents.

Look at shadow from the tree.

It's the shadow from the cirrus clouds above.

I don't have a tumblr account so I can't see your picture.

But just because a cirrus layer was not readily visible, it doesn't mean it wasn't there.

as Phage said, it's the shadow cast on the clouds. it's a cool effect. i've snapped many such shadows myself, like these;

No. Looking at the way the tree cast the shadow, I'd say that the fresh contrail is casting the shadow, not the old contrail.

The thin haze onto which the shadow is falling is well below the altitude of the plane, and the shadow is being cast in a direction that is generally toward the camera (probably toward and to the left a little -- just like the shadow of the tree).

After spending a couple of minutes with Google Maps, it looks like the photo was maybe taken at approximately 14486 Butte Mountain Rd. That's where the line of utility poles on the left side of the photo stops paralleling the road and takes off across the open field. At that point, someone following the road would be heading just about due East.
