I would not advise use of nuclear weapons for this task, but a large cluster of MOAB bombs, launched in such a way as to detonate on contact with the eyewall, preferably on the leading edge, all up and down its height, might slow it down at least. Using conventional explosives would also have the benefit of not being utterly stupid from a radiological perspective. Put simply, if we have Fukushima in the world, we cannot have anti-hurricane nukes. They would be a decidedly stupid idea, even without Fukushima to consider.

That is a thumb's up . Apparently NOAA only looked at the situation from a radiation (heat) perspective. There is a very large shock wave that accompanies major explosions . Especially in nukes.
Could a very large conventional explosion break up the wall of a hurricane ? Worth a thought

As an amateur internet scientist and nuclear expert, I can safely tell you all why this is a bad idea.

Radioactive Sharnado's.

Heck yeah! If the Earth wants to move around without our permission, a nuclear spanking should correct its behavior! And the US & and New Zealand already had a tsunami bomb program (HERE), so what better time to use it than when Mother Nature wants to give us too many waves? An eye for an eye, I say.

I don't agree about the spiders, though. We need them in gardens to keep down the harmful pests. Plus, who needs radioactive spiders running around? Aren't there enough Spider-Man movies? Does the world really need entire cities of mutant Spider-Men hooligans running around? The demand for radioactive spiders would skyrocket, creating a lucrative but illegal trade in spider smuggling. Unless we're gonna nuke the spider dealers, too?

Problem is they just arent powerful enough to do anything.

Also, it wouldn’t work. The key obstacle is the amount of energy required. The heat release from a hurricane is equivalent to a 10-megaton nuclear bomb exploding every 20 minutes, NOAA calculates. In order to shrink a Category 5 hurricane into a Category 2 hurricane, you would have to add about a half ton of air for each square yard inside the eye, or a total of a bit more than half a billion (500,000,000) tons for an eye 25 miles in diameter. “It’s difficult to envision a practical way of moving that much air around,” NOAA says.

Nuking the spider dealers would certainly escalate the War on Drugs to where I think it needs to be taken.

We should employ this tactic in every war we engage in.

War on Poverty? Nuke the homeless.

War on Christmas? Buh-bye nativity scene.

Energy shouldn't go to waste, instead of trying to dissipate the energy of a hurricane it should be sapped for it's energy. Instead of spending billions and time on repairs, massive windturbine parks should be build and then the energy can be caught and converted into electricity and power many peoples homes and businesses.

Not only parks in front of Florida and maybe Caribbean but also at the west coast of Africa where the hurricanes begin and dotted over Africa (the area where the easterly winds go through and buildup in strenght). It might not prevent any hurricanes but it could weaken them down to cat1 or 2 maybe.

It's a theory proposed decades ago with more recent scientific research a few years ago, also only recently windturbines were designed which are not only more efficient than the traditional windturbine but can also withstand high wind speeds. But so far nobody picked up this idea.

Ahhh Nuclear Hurricanes.

"Strong hurricane winds, with 180mph winds, torrential rain and with a 10,000 mSv index. Authorities advise to not evacuate, there is no point, and to kiss your ass a mutated goodbye. In other news, Hillary Clinton's new-found music career is taking off, see her twerk her bootie on MSNBC live at 6."

I always wanted to live in a world where the Toxic Avenger saved us all..

Pfft why didn't I think of that!?

Because it takes the intellect of an evil genius to think of it.

You're obviously not evil enough. Yet.

In an earlier thread about putting climate deniers in prison, I did think of just sentencing the earth to a life term of living with human kind, for her crimes against humanity.

Death sentence is a bit extreme, I think..

Just ask the Hurricane nicely to slow down.

Has anyone ever tried? I could never get the kids to settle down when they were wound up so I suppose that won't work.

If all people just gathered on the coasts and taken a deep breath and blown back out to see, everything would have been avoided.

Never underestimate the power of combined effort.

Hmmm... So is it the same for Nibiru & the solar flares of doom porn prophecy? I can't guarantee that nuking the Sun is going to do much because of the size discrepancy. I mean, it'll make us feel better and teach North Korea & China that we mean business, but still...

Not if we nuke it in winter when it's colder there.

will everyone please stop attempting to nuke thinks

but on a serious note :

if people are serious on the physics of the principlal

i reccommend - MOAB or a custom made thermobaric bomb be dropped into a strategic point of the next emergant " tropical storm "

my logic - some tropical storms develope to " hurricane status "

thus - with over 100 years of scientific meteorology - pick the next tropical storm that a concesncus of scientists agree will reach hurricane status - and bomb it with the biggest conventional device we can create

if the selected storm fails to develope into a hurricaine - then bomb the next 2 " cetrain to develope hurricane status "

assuming that neither escalates to hurricaine status

then you have 3 " sure fire hurricaines " neutralise by science - and thus a mandate that is likley to succeed

and a viable program to eliminate hurricaines

go after the precursor weather event - with weapons that have a very low impact on the environment - not attempt nuking hurricaines

I think dumping oil on it is a better solution but it would take LOTS of oil or a lot of nukes.

I bet if we spray oil all over it then drop a bunch of dolphins and whales into it along with plastic garbage and trees from the rainforest then nuke the hurricane we would definitely succeed in stopping it.

Great idea! Nuke hurricanes. That sounds like a great way to distribute radiation and fallout.

GENIUS!

So basically we need more coastal wind farms? I guess renewable energy really is a turning point for humankind (get it, get it? because they would make the hurricanes turn away - high fives self- )

I don't know why that's so funny to me. I instantly imagined a man looking up at the stars & teaching his son that the real reason winter happens is because the Sun goes through winter, causing it to send less heat to the Earth. Sounds legit.
