The selective service is there for a time of emergency.

If something happened where we ever needed to drop everything to defend ourselves, that's what it's intended for. Arguably, Vietnam was not that emergency, but a full scale invasion of the country would be.

Of course, since women are so cock-sure they can serve on the front lines, they should now be added to it.

But our regular army already can perform that duty. And if the active duty fails we have the reserves both active and inactive and even further down the pipeline we have the National Guard. Right now our military tech is near insurmountable. If an invading threat managed to surmount it then beating it back with sheer numbers from a draft probably won't help much.

All a draft does is create dissension and foster poor morale. You have deserters and draft dodgers you have to worry about because you have people who don't want to be there. The military will tell you that they have come to the conclusion a long time back that a volunteer army is FAR more preferable than a mandatory one.
