Somewhere,a few years back there was a video of a mantis capturing a humming bird. I would not have thought that possible if I had not seen it myself.

I just looked on YouTube, and there's a bunch of these videos. Evidently the mantis has figured out a way to hunt for an easy meal.

It's like the Mexican border.
Take them across and they come right back.

Maybe a relocation to Chile or the Southern tip of Argentina will work, metaphorically speaking of course... maybe Canada?

Oh #, Mantis jihad. Good luck.

I see what you tried to do there, but that's not what Jihad means.

All I can say is I'm more worried about this infestation in Mantis.

Horsehair worms infect the brains of bugs which makes them commit succide by drowning themselves so then the parasite can become free moving adults, careful swimming in that pool this summer.

Sounds like the time we found a small, dead garter snake, my cousin and I, and he came up with the bright idea to put it on my aunt's sunshade in her car so that it would fall down when she pulled it down in the morning ...

Landed in her lap for about the two microseconds that lap existed before she was out of the car in record time!

I killed a large cockroach one night at about 2am and flushed it and one of those things came out of it before the water took it down. At 2am when you're not quite awake ... it scared the bejesus out of me!

I hear ya!
I grow dill because black swallowtails lay their eggs and the caterpillars munch on the dill, and turn in nice, fat, green caterpillars.
And, they, too disappear.
I never know what happens to them.

Just part of the circle of life.
Like the birds that fall victim to the hawk that visits my yard.

I will say that mantises are cool with me though. I have just enough plants on my patio that occasionally I get mantises in them, especially the baby ones, and they are welcome to eat any and all bugs on my mini-roses and herbs. The plants are all clustered around my pond tub to bring in birds for a drink and dragonflies (another insect massacre agent), but insect pests still find their way onto my kitchen herbs and I would prefer not to spray, so little mantises, ladybugs, anything and everything that eats pests is more than welcome to hang out there.
