I feel like having have lived all over the country in very rich and very poor places across the US I have come to the realization that there is a breakaway civilization forming right here in our country alone. It's happening in a few cities across the US where the wealthy elite live and get to experience massive advancements in technology while the rest of the US goes back to the stone age.

Google Ventures

Take a look around that website and see what is going on in the breakaway civilization that the rest of us will be put out of jobs by. They are replacing us to make the things we won't be able to buy anymore.

I think we are nearing a point in technological advancements where the old ideas of capitalism and socialism are no longer going to apply.

We are entering new territory and new ideas will be required in order for humanity to move forward or pretty soon these people will be living on Elysium.

Forget the cities. Come, recapture our small communities and screw Elysium dwellers.

That would require far less arrogance and selfishness which as of right now I don't believe the average human is capable of, not even in small quantities.

That may change but not without much much much more hardship.

What's that saying by Jesus, "Heaven is within us"

To me that means we have to live selflessly as the example that was set by him and to live for each other and that by living for each other on a mass scale we no longer want or need as all of our wants and needs are met through the acts of selflessness by and to one another.

There has always been technology unobtainable by all, because the world isn't communist or socialist (thank goodness). I will never have a Rolls Royce or a quantum computer. Somehow I've managed to live a fulfilling life without having to possess what my neighbors have.

Just because there are advances in innovation does not indicate a “breakaway” civilization. It indicates humans are still capable of innovation.

BTW, there are jobs that are never going away. If you are that concerned, plenty of time for training.

Yes and no.

In the past new innovation have very quickly poured down the chain. With only a decade or two between a new innovation and it being available to masses.

Also income inequality when the USA and other western country where at there peak economically, decreased not increased.
The poor's standard of living was increasing alongside the rich.

Now income inequality is increasing at a very alarming rate with the poor standard of living dropping and the rich standard of living increasing rapidly.

This is actually a very bad sign. Its the sign of a dying economy and in the past results in civil wars and revolutions.

In 20 or 30 years time you think a society when 99.9% of the population have either stagnated in standard of living or more likely suffered a huge in standard of living when the 0.1% are living like gods with 200 year life expectancy's will be sustainable?

I believe the poster has a point about arrogance and selfishness. It all started with harnessing fire, which was given to everyone. Now, there are groups that think they invented fire and own the sun, wind, water, food.

there's also a saying in the bible that says,

Deuteronomy 5:21 King James Version (KJV)
21 Neither shalt thou desire thy neighbour's wife, neither shalt thou covet thy neighbour's house, his field, or his manservant, or his maidservant, his ox, or his ass, or any thing that is thy neighbour's.

i think that that fits this thread better.

That schism between the richest and everyone else is widening, the wealth is ever increasing at the top, until at some point they can afford anything.

Domed enclaves, or isolated islands terraformed to be self sustaining with a few service personnel, to maintain their elite life styes. Of course, to conserve resources everyone else will have to go extinct.

Pushes the button...

Edit: Anyone remember that TV show, Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous? "Champagne and Caviar", narrated by Robin Leach, they used to rub our noses in the elite, dangling that 'work hard' carrot in front of everyones nose, and it was a popular show!

Sad fact is they are already sequestered from everyone else. They fly around in Lear jets, ride jn Yachts, jet helos and armored limos. The venues they attend are off limits to you and me. Their offices are at the top of skyscrapers (with helo landing pads), their gated and guarded mansions are far from the madding crowd. Their feet hardly touch the same ground we struggle to make ends meet on.

People would be well advised to see films like the Original Roller Ball, Brazil, Metropolis, Elysium, Hunger Games...

I know but try to explain that to most people is like trying to explain the difference between a Medina and Mecca Muslim

Head off wall

If that implication was understood that post would have never been made

it's not outdated, in fact it tells people that if you are constantly worrying about what joe and suzy blow have, you miss out on your own life trying to get what they have.

life is more than possessions or wealth. nor is life he who has the most toys when they die wins.

Life is getting much harder for most of the world while a handful of people live in luxury

Its not about worrying about them its about how enabling them is causing so much suffering

They are already building floating cities..... made for the super wealthy.... far enough offshore to be their own entity. No taxes... no restricting laws... anything goes that they say goes.

Amen Sister!

I dumped the meaningless life of overt consumerism and endless greed to keep up with the latest trends in gadgets, cars, clothes etc to move to a small nearly deserted town in a funny old house with a very overgrown yard.

I have found the greatest joy and sense of satisfaction from the small things as I reclaim a lost gem from the grip of neglect and returning to my country hick heritage.

True happiness comes from what you can achieve with your own two hands and a bit of sweat, ie the good old analogue life. Even my partner, whom has been a true city slicker all his life and has no clue about country living has come to admit that he simply had no idea what he had missed out on growing up.

No it essentially part of being in the world but not of it.

Greed and covetousness are part of being too much in the world. They drag you down and create unhappiness. Is it wrong to personally aspire to more and better? Not necessarily, but where you should draw the line is where you feel like your goals are only achievable if you have to destroy someone else for you to get there.

you as a consumer have the choice on what you buy, do you have a smart phone instead of a flip phone. i don't.
a cheap smart phone starts around 200 bucks, my trac phone cost me 30, and 20 bucks a month, it calls people and i can get on the internet with it, i can p[lay games if i want down load apps, ring tones, so it basically does the same thing.

so i save that extra 170, plus the cost of service palns and so forth. if you can't be content in your life with basics or you spend money on stuff you can't aford that's not the rich persons fault.

now for those that can't work due to being sick, or old or what ever legit reason, i can see a problem. but those that want it and not willing to make work or make a sacrifice (pun intended) for it i have no pity for.

I disagree about the meaning of that scripture. I did from the first time it was attempted to brainwash my mind with it. That I should settle for being a servant for the desires of others. That scripture is about carpetbaggers that want to take your stuff, not make his own. Like wanting your wife, not find one of his own.

"And remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out...." Dt5:15
