Progressives New Plan To Force High School Kids Into The Military

Hey, this is kind of like the Vietnam days... go in the military or college or else (I guess you can get a normal job as well but you little SOB's will not be just living in your parents house by God!). Love Progressives and their addiction to authoritarian ultimatums to do as they wish or else.

Chicago, Illinois, has a chronic inflated state problem disguised as a schooling problem. In order to eradicate the symptom, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has decided to attack those who suffer from it and not the actual root of the problem — adopting a classic “more of the same” approach.

A plan approved in May is set to take effect soon, forcing high school seniors to either be enlisted in the military, have a job, be enrolled in a gap-year program, or have a college acceptance letter before the Chicago public schooling system will give them their diploma. The obvious consequences of this new policy are problematic. Still, Emanuel doesn’t seem to care.

Man, these people are fricken delusional. Before they open this can of worms maybe they should show they have some competence left and balance their state's budget first. Aren't they billions in debt now? As a state they can't just print their way out of it like our federal government does.

Maybe these politicians in their ivory towers are trying to get a lot of armed guards to protect them from the angry hordes of pensioners once the shell game is finally over.

Lower the tax rate in the state to bring in new companies and manufacturing, encourage internships/apprenticeships in the trades and you won't have to force kids to do anything.

Government does NOT have the right to tell people what to do or how to live their lives, but of course Progressives think they know best and it is for our 'own good'.

While this is an incredibly stupid idea, it's not a plan to "force kids to join the military" and nobody other than you has denigrated a kid who goes out and secures employment.

Your OP doesn't even touch on the deeper issues, which is that while this plan to force kids to think beyond graduation sounds good on paper but the Chicago school system is woefully unprepared to help kids do it. Thanks to their continuous budget crisis, the school system is severely lacking in staffing, which means there are far too few people available to implement the plan in any sort of constructive way.

Not that I think it's a good plan to begin with, but the fact remains that the system isn't even in a position to even attempt to do a proper job of it.

So, a kid can do all the work, get passing grades and complete high school and then be denied a diploma. Amazing!!!

Somehow I can't see most people from either side of the aisle being happy about this. Imagine how this will impact kids motivation to finish high school.

It's almost as if they are making this move to encourage kids to give up and drop out. Perhaps it's a money saving scheme to reduce class sizes and school funding needs.

Young people don't look past tomorrow in their thinking. Talk about an idea doomed to do more harm than good. Giving young people a convenient excuse to drop out is stupid beyond belief.

Then why'd you completely ignore the root of the issue, being the budget and financial issues in Chicago in general, and go for the flag and star farming headline?

How do you prove that you have a job? Is there a approved employer list? I'd be more than happy to employ them all, The pay is low though, just one penny, but the work is easy. All you have to do is VOTE!

I see the root of the issue as freedom of choice as opposed to money, but then when good old Rahm is so incompetent as to run his city into the ground, I guess finances are critical. Got to say Chicago is a great case study for the Progressive ideology.

what, in Chicago the city is the school board and not the county? that's kinda weird. and what does the state have to say about that?

Why does a really big wall sound like such a good solution to a lot of problems in today's age?

I just don't see what they are trying to pull off with this type of scam. I'm sure if someone follows the money trail, it will make sense eventually.

States cant enforce a Draft ( because this is exactly what it amounts to a draft with a get out of it clause .
i cant see how they think people will just say sure ok ill send my kid to boot camp .
Besides the military is already over staffed and ONLY collage people can even volnteir
fact is the US does not need to force people so many drop out would line up if they wouild be excepted but need to pass teh asvabe

No. It's not a good idea.

Most kids aren't even going to graduate from high school in Chicago to start with because the school system sucks. Of the ones who do, the employment opportunities for entry level are not good especially since Chicago has joined the mandatory minimum wage madness which pretty much ensures that high school kids aren't going to have much luck finding that level of work and less as time goes on, so that leaves the military, but most kids these days aren't physically fit enough to pass the entrance exams. Or you have kids forced into taking out a bunch of student loans to live in perpetual wage slavery assuming they can get entry to a college.

So what happens to those who fall through the cracks? Do they just live in perpetual limbo without the high school diploma they academically earned?

The liberal comes with an idea to do something about deadbeats who do nothing but suck up social programs and the right wingers still piss and moan. You people should at least support the military enlistment part seeing how our wannabe dictator is rattling cages the grinder will need all the meat we can throw at it.
