So many people refuse to understand how SNAP actually works anyways. Most on SNAP are underemployed or employed but not making enough to afford to eat. These aren't lazy people. It isn't easy to get on (you have to meet a very narrow standard of poverty to qualify), they barely give you any money to begin with, and if your income changes even slightly it'll drastically alter your benefits.

There is a grocery store here in st. louis, down in a really rough part of town, you will see some of the best steaks and seafood in the city in this store, and it usually shows up at the begining of the month. Ill let you figure out how they (the customers) pay for it.

Child benfit on its own per child is around $1000

Just on that alone it seems like you would break even.

Add in extra food and housing and the fact that child from poor familys will likely stay poor and children of welfare queens will go onto become welfare queens them self and you have saved money.

That sounds like some magic math to me. For one, why are you assuming the government will pay a reasonable price for this procedure? Everyone knows the government doesn't shop around but pays the price of the lowest bidder. For two, you can't calculate savings based on theoretical children that don't exist yet.

On top of that, you are adding an additional cost to each existing SNAP beneficiary. So add the price of the procedure to the cost for every current SNAP receiver before you even TALK about these hypothetical children that your crazy and hateful procedure is supposed to prevent and save money with. You also aren't considering the costs of paying professionals to install them at a reasonable speed to account for each beneficiary (millions of people). There is also health risks to consider.

There is only one way I can think of to describe this idea. Stupid and short sighted. Plain and simple. It would do more harm than good. Just like how drug testing welfare recipients always ends up being.

Putting aside the financial and etchical arguments of this, I don't think it's going to work out how you imagine. First of all, someone is always going to be in the bottom few percent, should these people automatically lose their ability to have children, just because of where they fall on the economic scale? Then, I think you need to consider the fact that science isn't where it needs to be for temporary sterilization to even work. Birth control isn't 100% effective, and you can't force people to use it. Even if they do, accidents happen and that brings us into the whole abortion debate. Then what do you do about the fact that even when we can do something like a vasectomy, after a few years the chance of reversing it substantially declines. What if someone is poor in their 20's, but well off in their 30's? Should the fact that they couldn't afford food in their 20's now actively be preventing them from having a child?

Lets put some numbers on this, you have 1000 people, 10 are the bottom 1% of income earners, 10 are the 51%, 10 are the 99%. If you reduce the population so that the bottom half are no longer there, people 500-505 become the new bottom 1%. Are we suddenly going to phase them out too?

Besides that, we still need unskilled labor. There are a bunch of jobs in society that require unskilled labor to work them, and the ultimate goal of automation is to continue to bring down the barrier of entry on labor until everything becomes unskilled. These people still need jobs. Furthermore, they cost virtually nothing to exist. The bottom 15% of income earners in the US have something like 0.001% of the wealth. They're also only responsible for about 1% of the economic activity, and economic activity includes welfare dollars spent. It's a near inconsequential amount of money.

Put proper controls on the vendors, so that they can only ring items up as they're supposed to, and 80% of the problem is solved. We have the technology to do that right now. Change barcodes to QR codes, as part of the QR code include flags for what programs an item qualifies for, and include a unique product ID on each item so there's no ringing up random items as something else. Handle it all through the centralized scanning hardware/software and electronic payments. Fraud would be reduced to very little.
