Elderly flight passenger throws coins into engine for ‘luck’, delays take-off for hours

Other passengers saw her actions and alerted the crew. Just a 5 hour delay.

A flight from Shanghai to Guangzhou was delayed after an elderly woman passenger was suspected of throwing coins into the plane’s engine to ensure “good luck”, mainland media reported.

Passengers boarding the flight reportedly saw an elderly woman throwing coins at the engine for blessings from the middle of the boarding staircase and alerted the crew.

Maybe... Just maybe, the delay stopped a mid air collision? It coulda happened. The coins could have been lucky after all.

Perhaps she has dementia or Alzheimer's disease? Good thing people saw her do it, imagine if they tried taking off anyway! Might have blown the engine

Do they still load passengers onto planes from the tarmac there? I don't see how any one, elderly or not, could get close enough to the engines to toss some coins in.

Good luck includes your kids getting a good insurance settlement when you crash. Yup, buy a million dollar coverage for a couple of bucks.

The most surprising thing is that stuff like this doesn't happen more often. After all there are still a lot of very superstitious people.

She is apparently a good throw though. No reports of coins on the ground and 9 recovered from engine.

It's a large airport. Wonder why the plane wasn't using a jetway type boarding system.

Chances are MUCH more likely the coins would have caused failure than anything else going wrong.

Rhino horns or monkey paws are so yesterday, I take it she was a progressive, hence the more convenient coins. But it looks like someone dropped a dime on her..

How is it good luck to throw something in the engine of the airplane you're about to ride in?

That sounds like guaranteed bad luck to me.
