In an episode reminiscent of Rowan Atkinson's famous "Fatal Beatings" skit in which an insane headmaster informs a parent that he has beaten his son to death, a University of Delaware professor, Kathy Dettwyler, has written on her Facebook page that Otto Warmbier, the student who came home from North Korea in a coma and subsequently died, "got exactly what he deserved".

I don't agree. I don't think he deserved what he got. I think what he got was out of all proportion to what he may have deserved for an alleged attempt to steal a poster.

I think, like Rowan Atkinson's crazy headmaster in the skit, Professor Kathy Dettwyler is in need of attention from the authorities. She may have a few screws loose.

On her personal Facebook page, Kathy Dettwyler, an anthropology professor, wrote that Warmbier was "typical of a mindset of a lot of the young, white, rich, clueless males who come into my classes."

"These are the same kids who cry about their grades because they didn't think they'd really have to read and study the material to get a good grade ... His parents ultimately are to blame for his growing up thinking he could get away with whatever he wanted. Maybe in the US, where young, white, rich, clueless white males routinely get away with raping women. Not so much in North Korea. And of course, it's Ottos' parents who will pay the price for the rest of their lives."

I wonder why she mentioned rape, the guy tried to steal a poster not rape anyone.
He was a fool though for sure, but not a rapist.
NK killed a guy over petty theft, I can only condemn it even if I think he was a fool.

Fatal Beatings:

This type of horrific victim blaming has no place in a supposedly civilized society. Also, notice the obligatory "Young, white, rich, clueless white males" part. GTFO with that chit. What is going on with college professors these last few years?!

Disgusting.

Well if he'd had more fatal beatings as a child, he wouldn't be in the situation he is now!

The North Koreans are the real victims here, according to them. '
'

en.wikipedia.org...

North Korean officials said their country was the "biggest victim" from his death as a result of a "smear campaign," stating their treatment of him was "humanitarian." A spokesman added,

"Although we had no reason at all to show mercy to such a criminal of the enemy state, we provided him with medical treatments and care with all sincerity on humanitarian basis until his return to the U.S., considering that his health got worse."[50]

Warmbier was sentenced to 15 years at hard labor for what amounted to a student prank, if it actually occurred, and they don't even see the absurdity of that part of it. (And neither did Professor Dettwyler.) This sentence is just the vindictive gesture of a country, run by by a desperately out of touch junior mafia don, whose only stock in trade is repression.

I must assume that some of these idiot far leftist professors are the reason he went to north korea in the first place. He wrongfully assumed that NK wasnt any more dangerous than other average nations. Newsflash: NK is not a socialist paradise.

I agree with the principle that "When in Rome", etc. Warmbier should have been more mindful of the laws of the nation he was visiting. And theft is illegal here, too. He should have realized a totalitarian dictatorship who openly despises his own nation would jump at the chance to detain and try him for anything, simply for the chance to embarrass or anger the US.
However, I do not think he was even remotely deserving of the horrendous mistreatment he was subject to. Stealing a poster of Tiny Fat Kim should in no way merit a death sentence, whether direct or indirect.
This professor is as misanthropic as most of the University Academia in the Western World, and I don't doubt her endorsement of Warmbier's death was the same type of twisted virtue signalling Hollywood is so fond of lately.

When were you last in college? I distinctly recall professors who would call out people who dared disagree with them on an issue pertaining to politics or policy. It happened to me, more than once.

I wasn't in college to learn how to parrot. Not all professors are like that thankfully, one of my fave profs was someone who I never agreed with, and our arguments were, shall we say, enthusiastic...but he gave me the courtesy of at least pretending to listen, but all too many want to have echo chambers where they preach, instead of classrooms where they teach.

He didnt steal , or try to steal a poster, he is accused of stealing a poster...another reason young and uninformed people should better learn the US constitution

Sigh. They try to teach you how to think. Something some people never learn to do. Some times they want the thinking to be more refined, outside of the knuckledragging ideas they are sometimes faced with.

If they 'called you out", they were probably trying to get you to THINK.

When students are constantly told the US is bad, and that our enemies are the victims, what do you expect? Otto probably thought all the bad stuff about NK was just evil US propaganda, and that they were actually a far better country than the US. Based on this site, I bet a lot of liberals think Iran is a fine place, and it's just evil US propaganda making them out to be a bad country. So who could blame a student when he goes there, and then gets held as a prisoner for something simple?

He was a member of a church group that had a collection of political memorabilia. He was trying to get them something from Nk to add to it.

Very dumb, but this racist teacher needs to bugger off with all the generalizations that better apply to kids with near zero social skills and missing parts of their education they didnt get while their public school teachers taught to the standardized tests their budgets depend on.

Rich kids of any race are better educated and prepaired for life. The filler classes these kids take arent really important to them. Only minorities make a career out of radical arts degrees and the fluff classes they are based on since they can go back to their communities and mobilize them to vote or donate.

These teachers dont show anyone how to compete and better their life. They instead treat them like suicide bombers. Go out and complete your mission, then I need to ignore you until needed. Be ready if someone like me orders you to get money or repeat a message.

No where do they say, go get your paper up and open up a business so you can employ people in your poor areas. They say there is no point and the better use of their time is feeling out more than they act out. Also, feel what is ordered and say /do what is expected... be poor and vote the way we say.

yes. typical.

I've seen less 'outrage' on more serious quips when the context is different...

Well, it certainly seems outrageous that an educator, someone who has chosen a career that revolves around educating and forming young minds, compares Warmbier to her own students. Who she obviously despises. And instead of trying to do what her profession entails, and teaching these students a better way to interact in the world, she justifies and advocates the assault and murder of who she describes as a typical example of those students

I'm posting her actual post here so it can't be "taken out of context". I think it's important to see who actually posts some of this outrageous crap. It's scary that a professor would have this kind of attitude.
