As an old West historian (and photog), I beg to differ. There are many documented cases of photographers admonishing patrons to not smile because the exposures may be blurred.
Further, while I agree sittings were not for hours, even an exposure of 4-5 seconds is way more than enough to blur a negative with motion unless the subject remains perfectly motionless...which is very difficult for most people to do. 4-5 seconds is a very long time.
