Boy oh boy, do we have problems. We really have to start looking out for these nutters (IS sympathisers/Radicals). Another hostage situation in Brighton, Melbourne, Aus. The situation is under control but some guy was holding hostage shouting 'this is for ISIS.. this is for al-Qaeda'.

www.independent.co.uk...

Police have shot and killed a gunman who took a hostage in Melbourne, after an apparent siege. The situation has been resolved after a man was shot and the woman who was being held against her will was rescued, according to Victoria Police. The man may have killed someone else in the foyer of the same apartment building

If we don't get a grip on these lunatics runing around... it's going to get worse. I also saw a flash of something happening in Orlando so I'm just about to read some of the thread on the shooting in Orlando, USA.

We've been hearing reports here in the US of the ISIS types being told to take hostages by putting up ads for stuff for sale on Craigslist and then nabbing the buyer when they show up.

There's no description or background information on the perpetrator.......have to wonder if that's PC purposed omission or if there simply hasn't been enough time for the authorities to make a statement.

There's no real solution to the WOT except to do more vetting and investigations/tailing and spying on suspects.

Its going to be a long summer season of brutality. I guess "winter" in Aussie Land.

I guess the Australian government must want to send more troops to Syria/Iraq.

Or maybe it was just a lunatic.

Local news source from Australia, Murdochs Fox Network.
Police investigate possible terroist attack in Melbounes southeast.

Police are investigating possible terror links to a siege in which police gunned down one man and found another dead in Melbourne’s southeast.

A senior law enforcement figure told the Herald Sun the gunman was on parole for a criminal offence and rated as a low-risk figure of interest to counter-terror authorities.

Police shot dead a gunman, a second man was found dead in the foyer of an apartment building in Brighton and three cops sustained gunshot wounds in the bloody hostage drama.

There is a limit to how much of this law abiding people will stand. I suspect we may be approaching it.

sweet baby jesus on toast! I give up there's nothing that can be done to combat this kind of guerilla warfare

On top of that a man has been arrested in Peterborough England after making a hoax bomb threat at the passport office
Peterborough's Shopping Centre Queensgate was evacuated after a suspected bomb was found

Some people really really need specialist help when they get a kick out of creating fear like this

To the contrary--there is plenty to do at the individual level to combat this stupidity. The problem is that where most of this stuff is happening, governments are restricting their citizens' abilities to have weapons that can combat this.

I'm not saying that everyone carrying a gun is the answer, but at least allowing the few who choose to do so with appropriate skills and training is always a better idea than hoping that police show up on time.

I don't want to turn this into a gun thread

I would really hate to see guns on the streets of the UK. Once you arm the security forces your crims automatically arm, once you arm the populace...all hell breaks loose and folk are shot dead for road rage, shoplifting or mowing their lawn on a Sunday

Okie dokie...to each their own, but your hyperbole surrounding what would happen if average citizens had easier access to carrying pistols is damn near laughable, because everything that you described would be an illegal act, so these would be criminals, and criminals don't care about the law.

But to each their own, I suppose. I'll just continue carrying my firearm whenever I want to, having never had the urge to unholster it in any situation. You can continue to enjoy being relatively defenseless. I'm sure you'd be happy if I was carrying a gun and somehow saved your life if that situation ever came to fruition. I hope that it never does, but with many people who comment like you, guns are always a scary idea until you need the assistance of someone with one...then suddenly they are lifesavers.

Unpredictable situations (such as are happening like in the OP) do not follow your ideological guidelines or no-weapons laws--it's better to be prepared and never have to use your firearm than to be in a situation where you need it, but don't have it (especially when it's because daddy government tells you that you can't).

See my Jefferson quote below for further understanding of my stance on your fears.

Are people going to start listening now?

Islam is dangerous. I've been saying it for ages. Not all Muslims are terrorists for sure, but as we keep on seeing, all terrorists are Wahhabi Muslim.

At what point do we decide enough is enough, throw down the gauntlet and act? Banning travel and Immigration from risk nations is not racist. It's becoming a matter of national security.

You don't want to turn it into a gun thread but yet, it may be the answer, or at least partly. Sometimes the hard choice is the best choice.

Sorry.

Yea, ask the other Muslim nations why they are racist for having a travel ban lol. But noooo, western civilization is racist for even thinking about it.

Well, we are better than that, which means we are better than them, which would seem to make us racist if we DON'T have a travel ban.

Therefore a travel ban would make us equal and not better and racist.

I am sure other Britons would share the sentiment, when I say that we are thinking of the people of Australia at this time, and hope that those affected by this incident, those who have lost a loved one, are cared for and loved by their communities, held up when they cannot stand, fed when they cannot see to themselves.

From my perspective on the broader War on Terror, it seems like the only thing that has not been tried, is the only way to go, and it boils down to "Perhaps we should not permit our governments to murder millions of Arabs, while selling guns and equipment to those who fund and support our enemies?". The death of innocents creates more terror than it solves, and funding and equipping the enemy seems counterproductive to me.

How in the H##l did this gunman get a gun in Australia.

This shows gun control would never work the way the liberals in the US claim it has worked in Australia.

Gun crime statistically has not changed drasticaly after the weapons buy back scheme of 1997.
Australian Institue of Criminal Homicide
Guns are still available legally with a license and specified purpose of ownership, just not fully and semi-automatic weapons.

There are plenty of guns available to those that really want to obtain them sourced from illegal shipments, local robberies of individuals and gun wholesalers, or the thousands of weapons still around pre dating the buy back. Crims have stockpiles of illegal weapons, gun ownership/use and sport shooting post weapon buy back is not as prevalent amongst the general populace. The populace are easier to controll and dependant on goverment protection, if invaded.

At the end of May in rural Queensland a guy with a hatred of the police went nuts with a machine gun shot up police cars an armoured tactical vehicle then killed a police officer who gave his life to protect his colleague.
