Something pretty dang rare is happening on the American music charts. "Despacito" by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee (and featuring Justin Bieber) has been the top song on the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks in a row. The song, which is in Spanish, is only the third non-English-language track to become the number-one song in America in the past 35 years

Oh, those other two chart-topping, non-English songs? "La Bamba" by Los Lobos and "Rock Me Amadeus" by Falco.

Newser

I would actually also add Informer by Snow to that list. Seven weeks at the top of the charts and no one to this day knows what language that was in. Might as well have been singing hieroglyphics.

Oh man! You mean Oye Como Va never had this honor?

Informer was in English, in a reggae accent, sang from a white man from Canada.

What a great song. And it's still #1 for many a high school band.

Oye Como Va was number 13 on the Billboard Charts in 1971, over 35 years ago. However, Gangman Style was number 2 on the Billboard Chart for 4 weeks in 2012.

I almost feel like you're trying to postulate something, but I wouldn't wish to presume

Mi ritmo es bueno pa gozar!

But as for me, my favorite will always be the Numa Numa.

I'm not sure I know what you mean, but the OP's article said it was only the 3rd song in 35 years. Oye Como Va did have the honor, over 35 years ago. But Gangnam Style was just 2012 and was omitted.........so there's that.

I'm not sure I know what I mean either.

But the OP is talking about #1's

Oh. For some reason I thought we were only talking about the top portion of the Bill Board list, like the top 20, or top 10. Carry on!

Music is food for the soul, I love Rammstein - can't understand one #in word, not one.

Btw, today this song is again up to date, because of the political circumstances and the lunatics in power, worldwide nowadays!

Love Gangnam Style!
This one hit the air here and I also fell in love with it even tho I remain clueless about the lyrics. Even made a point of taking the family when they played near me for another "weird night of Grandma music" thing. My kids don't 'get" I like a diverse array of music so I just drag them to stuff. Heheheh

Why this song never hit #1 boggles the mind.

You mean the United States only, correct? Because looking at any map or globe there's a multitude of different languages spoken up and down the "America's".

"America" has 3 parts-North America, Central America and South America.

Yeah, North America. I copied the title from the article so it did not specify.

The thing is, I posted this into music but it could have been posted in current affairs or any political forum as well. It indicates a change in our culture -- the growing Hispanic population, the growing number of Americans who are bilingual because of it etc.

How does this affect future elections since some candidates seem to willingly exclude that section of people or openly speak against them. All of this is linked.

Anyways, off to work, check back later.
