Am I reading this right? The soda tax is meant to even up disparity in education, but if there is any inkling of minorities having to fund it then they have to alter it so white people have to pay?

White privillege is a myth and i wonder why people push it so hard right now. This feels like a sinister scheme but the endgame is still a little bit unclear to me.

Did Philly tax the diet drinks as well?
If not maybe fat people switched to the cheaper aspartame options?
That could easily make a difference in comparison.

They taxed all soda. Regardless, it caused a 30%+ reduction in sales.

It's simple economics. If it's a smaller tax it might not be as drastic but there will be a reduction in sales of diet soda.

If they are drinking diet soda they aren't going to switch to regular. They'll drink other types of diet drinks.

Bit harsh fella.
It's more likely just city hall thinking up a bull# PC argument to raise more taxes.
Quite clever really as the middle class whites probably won't kick off about it.
Maybe an angry tweet or email at best lol

This is the mayor of the town from whence the song "Hunger Strike" came.

They don't mind stealing bread from the mouth of decadence.

Why stop at diet soda?
1) Throw a big tax on hockey game tickets
2) Impose a levy on golf Green Fees
3) Tax the heck out of Wienerschnitzel and Steak & Kidney Pie

No, no, you guys have got it all wrong! Tax sun screen! The higher the SPF, the higher the tax! Also, tanning creams and especially tanning salons!

This is absolutely brilliant.

We should bring it up at the next San Francisco city council meeting...would probably pass unanimously!

as of 2012, 29,000,000 Americans had diabetes....it's not a right/left thing, it's a health thing, the CDC says that by 2050, 50% of Americans will be diabetic.....yeah, no problem with that, right?

According to your logic we should levy a tax on fried chicken

Good idea and then use it to fund police in tackling black crime

Here it was 10 cent tax on bottled water but it was such a pain for businesses to do the paperwork and write the checks every month most quit and put in filtered water dispensers for free water. So the city decided that businesses needed a permit to dispense water. Now there's nothing but free city drinking fountains.

Oh I get the simple economics, I'm just thinking from the slant of soda addicts compared to alcohol in the UK.
Here the government usually increase tax on booze every year, but sales increase each year.

I'm genuinely surprised that soda addicts bought 30% less, I wouldn't have been surprised if the tax had been on say cabbages.

It will fall flat. I live in a Phila, PA suburb and the lib Philly mayor instituted a soda tax. The taxes he was hoping to generate thus far have fallen short, as most city residents who live near the suburbs do their grocery shopping outside the city and buy their soda there. And don't even get me started on his policy of declaring Philly a sanctuary city for illegals.

Alcohol addiction is a thing and there aren't legal substitutes.

You can substitute other things for soda, diet or otherwise.

The mayor is about to go down in a pedophile scandal. This is a way of diverting the issue. But on the whole Seattle residents get the government they deserve.

He's an idiot. I live 2 hours out of Philly but still see the news on it. Didn't they already spend the estimated tax income? Idiots.

Then he has the nerve to say it's corporate greed which is causing the layoffs, not his tax. Own it! He enacted the tax and needs to own the consequences!! Makes me mad and I only visit from time to time.

Its reperations via proxy...

Slightly off topic maybe, but why is it that all of the talk about reparations has to do with African American descendants receiving money from people of European extraction (never mind that none of the designated victims or any of the deemed-to-be offenders were alive during the times of slavery)?

Why aren't there on-going left wing crusades demanding reparations be paid to Native Americans...I mean they only had the entire country taken from them, suffered attempts at complete genocide, and were banished to near-barren "reservations"?

Just seems weird that it is always "blacks" that are singled out in this way... Oh wait, that's right, Native Americans don' t have a large-enough voting block to matter to Democrats (2% versus 13%).

All the shops just outside Seattle received a huge business opportunity selling diet soda.

The SJW's really have lost it now, yet more cause to cannibalize themselves!

you all thought it was a great idea to tax smokes and stomp on smoker's heads.

Afterall, smokes are unique in causing health issues and the government need to save money in health care dollars.

So the anti-smoking crusaders made off like bandits! And in general, the population cheered.
oh how everybody jeered at smokers for saying that this was a slippery slope and would lead to taxation on other products.

Now its anti-obesity's turn - afterall, soda is unique is causing health issues and the government needs to save money in health care dollars.

Anybody doubt that this is indeed the slippery slope that smokers warned you about?

You all are getting exactly what you voted for. Government were allowed to attack, harass, tax smokers. Now its the turn of every single citizen for as long as one of us is a single pound overweight (and if there is any danger whatsoever of that happening, then they will simply change the definition of obesity, just like they changed the definition of addition so that they could smear and attack smokers).

We are all smokers now. Enjoy!
