Taiwan has passed landmark animal protection laws imposing fines for the consumption of dog and cat meat as well as jail time for those who kill and torture animals.
The Animal Protection Act amendments approved by the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday punish the sale, purchase or consumption of dog or cat meat with fines ranging from NT$50,000 to NT$2 million.

She noted that Taiwan was the first country in Asia to pass such legislation.
The amendments also stiffen punishment for those who intentionally harm animals to a maximum two years' imprisonment and fines of NT$200,000 to NT$2 million.

I for one am so glad this action is being taken. I read an article several years ago about the torturous process in killing of these animals for food and it broke my heart. It is one of the few articles I wished I could have 'un-read'. It appears the social norms are changing in a big way and although it won't address all the miss deeds, it is a big start.

Why is a dog different than a pig?
Will anyone else be willing to stop eating beef because India says they are sacred?

One of the lowest points in my life was a conversation something along these lines many years ago.
" So tell me G.I. , you eat dog ?
I eat dog, how come you no eat dog ?
See my skin so pretty, I eat much dog. "
Sound of automatic weapon cycling.

If you actually ask a poor Asian he'll tell you that they eat cats, dogs, rats etc. and the rich eat pork, beef etc.
