Taiwan has passed landmark animal protection laws imposing fines for the consumption of dog and cat meat as well as jail time for those who kill and torture animals.

The Animal Protection Act amendments approved by the Legislative Yuan on Tuesday punish the sale, purchase or consumption of dog or cat meat with fines ranging from NT$50,000 to NT$2 million.

***SNIP***

She noted that Taiwan was the first country in Asia to pass such legislation.

The amendments also stiffen punishment for those who intentionally harm animals to a maximum two years' imprisonment and fines of NT$200,000 to NT$2 million.

I for one am so glad this action is being taken. I read an article several years ago about the torturous process in killing of these animals for food and it broke my heart. It is one of the few articles I wished I could have 'un-read'. It appears the social norms are changing in a big way and although it won't address all the miss deeds, it is a big start.

Ha! Good luck enforcing that one. If they do then they're going to have some serious revenue inbound. I have friends in Taiwan, Vietnam, and China and all of them say the same thing...locals will eat anything on 4 legs...anything. My folks go to China every few years, and never fail to be offered their pick of dog in cages in certain areas...obviously they don't partake and yes that is China, but Taiwan is very similar.

Why is a dog different than a pig?

Will anyone else be willing to stop eating beef because India says they are sacred?

Good for them, for at least trying to change.

I just wish we had stiffer penalties here in the US against animal abuse.

Great questions. Also this no doubt helped with cat and dog overpopulation problems.

One of the lowest points in my life was a conversation something along these lines many years ago.

" So tell me G.I. , you eat dog ?
I eat dog, how come you no eat dog ?
See my skin so pretty, I eat much dog. "

Sound of automatic weapon cycling.

It confuses me as well that a dog or cat are considered more worthy of life than a chicken, a duck, a cow, a pig, a crocodile (most tasty meat)

As a meat eater I couldn't care less what animal I'm eating as long as it tastes good

I get the concerns for the welfare of the animal and believe they should be treated well before slaughter but I don't believe there should be certain animals off limits for eating just because they happen to make good pets

The only exception should be rare and endangered animals really, which dogs and cats are neither

Animal welfare in Asia and China is pretty appalling. There are no end to vids on YouTube of routine and cultural animal cruelty, although I confess to not actually viewing them, but Google if you dare.

Taiwan is advancing up the scale. Good for them.

If you actually ask a poor Asian he'll tell you that they eat cats, dogs, rats etc. and the rich eat pork, beef etc.

I can see where the distinction could be odd, the whole 'we only want to save the cute animals' mindset is an odd one.

But then again there was a Vietnamese poolhall I used to frequent. I got close with a bunch of them, and eventually they told me how they would snatch up and eat the cats whom were drawn to the dumpster out back; lets just say there was enormous draw in that dumpster with what one fo the other business in that spot dumped into it everyday. Insane amount of cats would be out there at night like a scene from a cartoon or something.

SO dude starts telling me about what was in all those big platters they'd make up for themselves every now and then, but wouldn't ever share any with me. At first I thought they were messing with me, my proficiency with satire / sarcasm / etc, that they were acting the stereo type to appeal to my dark humor...

I really didn't believe him at first... until he started describing how people pets are the best tasting ones, that the stray cats are scrub meat its the soft plump pet kitties that you want to cook up. And then he described how they'd destroy the evidence (the collars).

And then I believed him!

Since then I've read they have bad rat problems in a lot of those places because every time a cat peaks around a corner outside some sneaky little bastard snatches em right up so there aren't hardly any cats, not even pet cats, around, with the way they're seen as walking ribeye steaks or whatever.

It's 2017 and most Americans still think Asians are all one group of people who looks chinese, speaks one language and all live in one country called Asia.

Being Asian American myself, it's so sad how Asians are so diverse in food, language and culture only to get stereotyped into one race. It's 2017, not 1970s.

Baby steps. It is a law and it will gain power with time......and enforcement, lol. Rome wasn't built in a day so this will take some time to reach some.

This has evidently been imposed upon them by the power of "world opinion" expressed through the internet.
It shows how the natural tendency of the internet is to abolish all forms of diverse behaviour, in the long-term, and enforce cultural uniformity.
One day nobody in the world will be allowed to like or do anything that the rest of the world doesn't like or do.
