There is always a remedy against automation - taxation.
How 'bout we go with the flow, embrace automation and make it work FOR us instead of against us? Maybe build a Utopia where we all have the time and resources to pursue some Life, Liberty and Happiness for a change. Like with UBI?
Fighting against automation won't work btw - it's way past too late for that.
That's exactly my take on it. Automation seems to be the "magic pill" that can finally free humankind from most forms of menial labor. I simply can't consider any civilization as being "advanced" when the majority of its citizens have to do grunt work just for that civilization to survive.
Unfortunately, excessive automation in a capitalism-heavy society creates its own set of problems. I think we'll have to shift to socialism for it to work completely. Or we could nationalize and automate all of our needs, while allowing capitalism for wants.
An example would be a hypothetical "Department of Shelters" using 3-D printing and automation to provide enough public housing for all citizens. But citizens would still be free to buy &/or sell other homes on the market. Or a State's Dept of Agriculture running fully automated factory farms that provide enough basic foods for the citizens. But citizens could still buy & sell food products on the market (as in, rice & beans are free but McDonald's and a lemonade stand still cost you).

You're still thinking in current terms. In a system where government departments handle & automate our necessities, there's no need for welfare or even most forms of employment. All of our needs would be covered w/the bare minimum of workers needed to operate, repair, or upgrade the automation equipment.
However, anyone could still do freelance work or even start companies in their now excessive free time. The difference is that no one would have to work just to survive. Any money made or "needed" would be purely for non-necessary goods and services. Taxes could still be levied on these, with the tax money going to maintain and expand the automated system.
1. Bare minimum for all citizens: Public housing dorm, 3 meals a day, healthcare, public transportation, vouchers for basic living supplies (govt made soaps, etc).
2. Citizens now have all day every day of "free time". All play and no work is fine, but the citizen gets nothing from society beyond the bare minimums mentioned in #1. Now citizens can spend more time with family, hobbies, or whatever (generating no income) without the "work or die" social pressures that keep people away from loved ones and their personal dreams.
3. Citizens can also start companies or join existing companies for additional income. They can obviously use this additional income to purchase nonessential goods and services. The additional income generated from these companies and/or individual incomes go back into the system to maintain and expand the "bare minimum" programs mentioned in #1.
This is all sounds way more complicated than it really is. In reality, it's just an upgrade over what we currently have. For example, I could see the Dept of Agriculture & the Bureau of Land Management being merged, and then fully automated industrial farming facilities being set up on the public land. The crops are then allocated to citizens in place of food stamps, school lunch programs, etc. Or automated 3D printed shelters are built on that public land, and are used to replace Section 8 housing.

Problem with that, is governments are too busy stealing and plundering to line their own bank accounts to bother with helping their people in any meaningful way lol.

Do you really think that somebody is going to invest million' s in research and millions more in purchasing robot's just so other people can sit around and ponder the wonders of the universe?
