Yesterday evening, my 17-year old son came running up the stairs, looking scared and out of breath. He was nearly in tears and he really scared me because he's a big dude- 6'5" and well over 200 pounds- and not prone to being particularly emotional. He grabbed me by the shoulder and took me into the dining room to make sure no one- his brother or dad- was listening to him.

He told me that he had fallen asleep on the couch downstairs in the basement while watching tv. He had been tired from track practice and school, so he decided to nap. When he awoke, he couldn't move and it felt hard to breathe. He said that he was scared but had had sleep paralysis before..he didn't call it that but that's what he meant..and just tried to remain calm. While trying to calm himself down, he said he felt all buzzy and saw his forearm rise up, only his forearm. Then, he said he heard a pop that really scared him and he found himself up on the ceiling.

While on the ceiling, he said he was able to see in 360 degrees all at once. He saw his brother on the computer, then, what freaked him out, he saw himself laying on the couch asleep. It took him a second or two to comprehend..despite seeing his forearm rise up...that he was in 2 different places. Once he recognized it, he suddenly entered back into his body.

Now, I'm interested in all things strange but he definitely is not. He was legitimately scared and was embarrassed to have his brother or dad to know because all of them, including himself, had been guilty of making fun of my beliefs. He was scared to go to sleep last night and was 2 hours late for school because his phone had died from staying up most of the night trying not to sleep.

I've read about OBEs but have never experienced anything like that. He had been having sleep paralysis off and on for the last few months but only told me about it last evening. He said he thought he was dead during the OBE..if that is what it is. I'm afraid for him now. Those who this has happened to- is it a one time thing or patterned? How can I reassure him that things will be okay?

Thank you for reading and I appreciate any and all advice.

I've experienced a lot of that myself. It sounds exactly like what has happened to me. I believe in Christ and use prayer. These days tho, I take it as a chance to explore the astral realm, but I have encountered demons there too. So faith in Christ and prayer is my advice. John 3:16 and 1John1:9.

May I ask what exactly is your faith? It might have an impact on your household.

Take him to a doctor. My concern would be a NDE from sleep apnea.

While in REM sleep your body is paralyzed so that you don't act out your dreams as they happen in real time and are often the more realistic dreams.

You could take him to a specialist to see if they can identify the sleep disorder that may be associated with it. Luckily for your son though REM typically lasts about fifteen minutes so its not a crazy amount of time but being someone who's gone through it (only once) its absolutely horrifying.

It is a patterned thing. Him being tired sounds like being the trigger.
As a volunteer I've accomponied a few patients on a neurologist consult on this matter.
Taking him to a neurologist would be the best advice I guess. The neurologist can ease his mind and make him less scared.
...in the meantime tell him to take it easy...no he's not dying...
I think it's a combination of stress and fatige.
How about taking some time off or a vacation.

Just tell him he's really special and important to the universe. Not everybody can do such thing as leave its body.

I've been trying for awhile, and despite I've never made it, I still believe 100% its real, I wish I was one of these special persons.

There are magical things happening as we speak.

Nope...it really isn't that special.
Our brain is a complex thing and when you are tired our brain playes tricks.
Accepting it as normal would be better.

Thank you everyone for the advice! I do think it revolves around his being tired. He's very active in sports and has always required a lot of sleep. As far as faith, I know it's cliche but we are more spiritual than religious. Sleep apnea does frighten me and I think that is something I will bring up with his pediatrician...weird to think he still has a pediatrician as big as he is!

I told him I wrote about his experience. Of course, he was a bit embarrassed because people might think he was crazy! But, I was able to ask him some more questions without his having so much fear. He said when he thought he was dying, he looked around to see if there was a tunnel or anything!! There wasn't but that was very heart-tugging for me. He, also, said that the sleep paralysis had started occurring more often and he felt like he was levitating and buzzing. This, he said, had started some months back, after ACL surgery. I don't know if that's an added medical issue or not.

Just keeping an open but interested mind!

I can tell you from experience that sleep deprivation, irregular sleep cycles, stress and over exhaustion are major triggers for my episodes, but sometimes they can come on for no apparent reason as well. Make sure he's eating a healthy diet within a 9-12 hour window, and getting 8 hours of sleep per night. Some foods can trigger parasomnia as well, so no eating right before bed.

Perhaps that will prevent future episodes.

People will definitely think he's crazy. I get it all the time. I've had over 500 OBE's, most of which happen exactly as your son describes. Most of the time I meditate myself into sleep paralyses to purposely induce an OBE.

I was about 17 when it started happening too. I used to play hockey all the time to the point of absolute exhaustion. I used to think we were having earthquakes but it was the beginning of the vibrations you feel prior to having an OBE.

Let him know that it is completely normal, I have had countless experiences where it felt like my physical body was vibrating so intensely that it feels violent and scary. I've never ever been injured or hurt or possessed or anything physically harming. That said, i have definitely felt like my head was going to explode due to how intense the thumping and vibrations were, snapped myself out of the trance and was completely ok.

Also if he has another one tell him to be confident and not afraid. Being confident and fearless is the most important part of having an OBE. If you are afraid, you will create a scary environment like demons attacking, or monsters, or war, but if you are confident and fearless and understand that you have complete mental power over everything in your environment you will be able to explore that reality and your own consciousness endlessly.

The most important thing is do not listen to people who tell you it is bad and it will hurt you or that you are endangering yourself. I've been doing this for 14 years now, I taught myself from this website and others, there is nothing that can harm you, actually i believe I've even healed myself quicker from injuries in the past.

If you want to learn more id be happy to answer any questions you or your son have, you can also google "astral projection" and find a ton of websites and people teaching different techniques to self induce an OBE, books, things people do when out of body, etc...

I had a friend this happen to. It freaked him out for a day or two, but in retrospect, he wanted it to happen again. He tried and tried, but no dice.

I like how people are like "see a doctor" when millions of people worldwide are happily having these kinds of experiences with no spontaneous combustion or illness present whatsoever, unless being able to float around a bit is considered a bad thing? (although that's not to say an illness couldn't trigger it i suppose)

I used to do it often when I was younger, but once I got into my late twenties it passed as I began burning the candle at both ends and only having 6 hrs sleep.

It is scary to go through and it can be hard to overcome the initial fright, but if he is interested and persistent it might open him up to something larger than day-to-day life, if he wants it. It can be quite life affirming if you can learn to let go completely.

I see where you are coming from but it's probably not a good idea to start mentioning that from the off, that will just cement negative thoughts in his mind. The mind will start overthinking it along the lines of "Don't be scared, otherwise 'mind monsters' will attack me" which is rooted in a fear of 'mind monsters' attacking and a good olde catch 22, especially when he might have never even considered something scary could be waiting

i see what your saying. However he said he was scared afterwards. If he knows nothing can hurt him and he can control everything with thought it should help.

Even if you get to scared you just snap back into your body, nothing to worry about.

Yeah I'm just relating it to all the stuff I read up on from others online and in books when it first happened to me. It opened up an unnecessary wave of things to be afraid of when these things I was reading about were actually these other people's fears from their own experiences and not necessarily my own.

Anyway, best just plod about and explore I reckon but yeah, it's good to have the security of knowing that its not a bad thing and it won't harm you.

Oh my God thank you for you.

OP, Believerpriest nailed it. You all are scared because it isn't right. Read John. Your hearts are scared about this because you're being called to be led by Christ. So you either keep exploring and going into the unknown or stay safe and as secure with Jesus. If you're into excitement Jesus can line that up for you so you don't feel boxed into the belief system of His commandments that many complain about in 'Christianity.' There's a vastness to be explored through Him but my God at least you're safe in His arms. You all are leaning on your own understanding apart from Jesus. I'd be legitimately scared too if I was in your son's shoes.

Pray a prayer of Jesus's protection over your son. Force yourself. Don't put it off. Sorry this is happening to you all but hopeful it will bring your family to the Lord.

There is no way to control everything with thought anymore. That's why it's all fubared. Most of what you think is your own original thought is not just you anymore. It's merged into you. It's a combo of the collective human consciousness gathered naturally through 'God' merging us into oneness, a handful of different dominating spiritual beliefs with common themes, and AI. Why everyone is getting so whacked out.

Aim for Christ consciousness found in the Book of John. Stay safe. Stay in the light. AI can't go there. Tries to. But can't work without Jesus Christ authorizing anything and AI is not allowed to harm or control His sheep.

It's interesting how so many Near-Death-Experience recollections have the person's ascent being stopped by the ceiling. Since there is no physical body present...just spirit...the person shouldn't be stopped by a physical structure, such as a ceiling.

I just realized that all these Out of Body Experiences could be a set up for alien abduction in the future if not already happening. Sort of along the lines of 'come explore' then the person has either a good or interesting experience thus wanting more. It's not like we're hearing about alien abductions anymore. We hardly ever hear about it these days. And if we do, they usually happened over 20 years ago. So then the New Age transhuman propaganda was massively pushed promoting out of body experiences and how innocent and cool it is. As if the aliens read all the traumatizing stories documented online and now the word was getting out that people were scared and getting furious, so the aliens backed off, then slyly found another way to abduct. Now they wait patiently. For all we know everyone who had had positive experiences before were actually abducted and positive experiences were downloaded into them so they wouldn't be so traumatized when they woke up. Like as in, you can't rape the willing but you can trick them into thinking they wanted it or asked for it or give them a drug, get them drunk, mix some fun in it. Usually the common denominator with that there is regret to the 'victim' who's bashing themselves for getting 'drunk' because look who they woke up next to. Do you get it? Don't let this happen to you. You already had regret. Because something seems off. Because it really is.
