Title grab your attention?

Well, that's exactly what the small Asheville NC jewelry store hoped would happen, when it put up this billbord:

OUTRAGE from citizens and Chelsea Clinton saying that the small, Asheville family-owned, jewelry store was intentionally promoting violence against women...has resulted in a major apology from the store:

In response to the outrage, the jewelry company, Spicer Greene Jewelers, posted an apology to its Facebook page, saying it does “not condone violence of any kind toward any being.”

“We are humble enough to realize when we make a mistake and humble enough to realize the context in which we are speaking,” the statement said. “We did not intend to cause controversy and our billboard communicated something we did not intend. We intended the billboard as a play on words to encourage the loving act of gift giving and are deeply saddened that it offended anyone.”

The store suggested that it will be taking down the offensive billboard.

The Washington Post reports the story:

The jewelry store billboard was supposed to be a “fun play on words,” one of its owners said. But for those driving along the interstate in Asheville, N.C., the advertisement left a different impression.

“Sometimes, it’s ok to throw rocks at girls …,” the billboard for Spicer Greene Jewelers stated. A cluster of colorful gemstones surrounded the words. The outrage was immediate among some local residents and soon spread nationwide as the images of the billboard circulated on the Internet.

Many argued the advertisement supported a culture of violence against women.

Critics called for the billboard to come down. And a group of about 15 people protested outside the company’s store on Sunday. “Really?” One sign at the protest read. “You can’t possibly have thought ‘Throwing rocks at girls’ was harmless!”

“Not cool,” one woman, Shannon Page wrote on Facebook. “Normalizing and finding humor in the, ‘He hit you because he likes you’ mentality that we feed to children is not ok.” She added that children in cars driving by would not understand the humor in the billboard, and would simply believe it would be acceptable to throw rocks at girls.

Others called it “tone-deaf,” “misogynistic” and “disgusting.”

Fortunately, Chelsea Clinton was able to take a break from her lifetime award-winning schedule to weigh in on this on Twitter:

On Friday, Chelsea Clinton weighed in, tweeting: “Talking about hitting girls is never funny. Ever.”

WHAT SAY YOU, ATS? Clever and fun marketing...or offensive, misogynistic, anti-woman propaganda?

In some cultures it is ok.
But it's not ok to make a joke about it.

I think it's stupid, but then I think all marketing is.

Anyone who is offended by that billboard (any more than they're offended by any other billboard) needs to get a life.

These are the kinds of people I hold responsible for the downfall of humanity. We're all too busy bickering about PC terms and imaginary genders to solve real problems.

Idiots.

What a sensitive society we live in. I think it boils down to intentions, and clearly the intentions were not to be offensive.

I think that billboard needs some editing.

Sometimes, it's OK to throw rocks at SJWs and actually put up a picture of some ungrateful hipster being stoned.

This is what is wrong with people, anyone who looks at this and thinks that it is to be taken literally is just simple minded, and has no life, looking for any reason to complain. If these people would find something that is worth complaining about then we might have a chance. But you will not get enough people to band together on hard issues with real importance or impact on real world situations.

Right?

I am seriously concerned, that this whole PC "I'm Offended" is the new youtube 15 minutes of fame thing.

"Oh, your offended by that? Well, I'm offended by this!"

I am going to be that crazy old lady, that runs around "offending" everyone, intentionally. Just think, if they are all in their "safe spaces", then they won't be out on the streets, right?

And yes, I actually sent an email to this Jewelry company, apologizing that there are so many crazy people in this world. And telling them I thought it was cute.

Hey TAT,
As a woman...and a past victim of domestic abuse...I feel the need to voice my opinion.

I'm pretty sure that sales pitch was meant to be seen, meaning the entire picture...not just the words alone. Whereas your thread title may have been somewhat misleading, lol...the picture with the sales slogan has an entirely clear message. (and it ain't violence)

What's next? Every person who says "hit me" at a casino table is also promoting violence?

It's Britney Spears song, "Hit Me Baby One More Time" all over again.
Yeah, I get it. The words "hit me" sound so ugly...but trust me, the words "I love you" AFTER being hit, well they sound so much worse.

I learned much about advertising (and appealing to certain potential customers) when I sold real estate, and I doubt that the store owners put out a vocal (radio) commercial stating only those words. (they are meant to convey throwing rocks/jewels/diamonds at her...when I saw the ad all I thought was, "I wish".)

Just my two cents (Cdn. so that's like 5 bucks for you)
