Im posting this in Skunk Works because it just plain stinks!!! So MODS, if you feel this will be better categorized in a different forum, please move accordingly.

So, this Senator is caught in a Motel room with an underage male prostitute, and one of his penalties is losing his reserved parking space at the Capitol!!!
But..... he still collects his yearly salary, and still gets to vote! Dont get me wrong, I believe everyone is innocent until proven guilty, as our once great Constitution states, but when caught by police officers, in said Motel room, with said prostitute, and the amount of damning evidence against him, I think he should be sanctioned more harshly until he is convcted. Let him keep the parking space, (so people know where to find him), and pull his salary and his right to vote!!! This is not a 'man' i want making decisions on me, or my States behalf...

I'm pretty sure if he is convicted of 3 counts of felony prostitution charges he won't be collecting that $38,000 salary

Like you said, innocent until proven guilty. What part of that statement don't you understand? He was just caught and his trial has not yet started, right? So today, he's innocent. What if this is a trumped up charge and he was set up by a political rival? I mean, all you have is a newspaper account, right? So does the newspaper get to be the prosecutor and you get to be the jury? What you are advocating is that he is guilty until proven innocent.

17 years old is not a child -- why do people keep saying this. A child is prepuberty. He also didn't molest anyone, it would be considered statutory since it was mutually consenting. 17 is a grown man, who is anywhere between 365 and 1 day shy of legally an adult.

Saying he molested a child is purposefully misrepresenting. THere is a farcry between molesting children [think ~10yo and younger] and having sex with 17 year old who has his own car, can possibly be living on his own and also be part of the work force....

Like wtf.

I was also surprised by that, but according to the article OP sourced, Senator Shortey's salary is $38,400 per annum

I may or may not agree with you--that's beside the point--but at least what you're proposing here is consistent with letting the justice system do it's thing, but advocating that society/employers do what they can to punish this garbage prior to his day in court.

I give you props for keeping the two separate--many people can't do that. (I was expecting to you say you wanted to make an exception to the rule of law for this guy)

17 is going to be the voting age in California from what I understand. 17 Would probably be legal but I don't know for sure.

A 17 year old boy is a minor. Sex trafficing a minor is not consensual sex.
There is no defense of this elected official for what he did.
Like wtf.

I have to laugh at everyone trying to make excuses for this guy. I can only surmise this is because of his "station." I can guarantee you, if it was Joe Schmole the electrician or chef, the same people making excuses for this guy would be demanding automatic prosecution.

I really couldn't care less about him being a Senator. If he was found in a compromising position with a minor, prosecute him. That's the problem now. These people in "authority" and high ranking positions have absolutely ZERO accountability. Nil.

This is true. At the same time, ive seen a 19 year old male charged with sexual assault of a minor fo getting his 17 year old gf pregnant.
The justice system does what it wants.

Thanks or noticing! I do still believe in this Country and its Constitution. With a pending felony charge though, I think he should be suspended until convicted without pay or benefits. If found not guilty, he should be repaid his benefits/salary and reinstated.

Omg Schuyler, change that avatar! Or else I'll have to stalk you on Skype.

Any other "public servant" would be put on leave without pay until a trial. Only if proven innocent would they be reinstated. And if proven guilty, well, that's up to the judge. It would depend on the age of consent in that state. Every state is different, and if we believe in the rule of law, it should be respected. Don't like the law, change it.

What the initial resolution is simply stating, is that he gets to show up, do the things a state senator for Ok does, which is vote and then go home. Until there is a trial, where he is found innocent or guilty, they can not just merely kick him out of office until that time frame.

If he is found not guilty, they will restore to him what they took away. If he is found guilty, well then he is going to lose his seat, his cushy salary and ultimately spend time in prison. But until then, it is a matter of a criminal case.

Sides think on it this way: He is getting punished far worse right now than many of us will know, he will be looked on with suspicion at his church, his wife is probably considering filing for divorce and demanding sole custody of his children. His party is going to turn on him like sharks at a feeding frenzy, cause he betrayed them in a way that makes them look very bad. And those who do not like him now have vindication to stand up and say: I told you so.

I guarantee you if I got caught sleeping with a 17 year old girl people wouldn't be saying "innocent until proven guilty!"

Though I've said before our society is ridiculous with the whole statutory rape thing.

So is he a Republican? That would explain all the apologizing here.

Not many teens just sudden up and decide to become prostitutes you realize how this usually works. If the 17 year old was your son would he be a grown Man to you?
This shows there is a problem I found this while looking for this case tip of the iceberg.

CHICAGO — A man who said Dennis Hastert sexually abused him decades ago told Illinois lawmakers Tuesday the former U.S. House speaker was "a monster" who was protected by the statute of limitations and wasn't appropriately punished.

On all points - I 100% agree with you, Seaworthy.

Selling his body was not something any 17 year old wakes up one day and decides to do for fun or a career. This kid was in a bad situation.

Yeah, the Senator needs to have a fair trial, but come on, the evidence is pretty clear.

Him, Hastert, all the other hypocritical creeps that worm their ways up to become political leaders -- Why, oh, why do they keep getting away with this?
And more importantly, why, oh why is this who we have to choose from for our leadership? (bangs head on table)

Former Ohio Mayor Pleads Guilty to Raping 4 Year Old

What a sick turd....
Punishment is simple: Tattoo his forehead, in big block letters - "Guilty of raping a 4 year old" -- and make him walk the city streets for one year; if he survives, he can spend the rest of his miserable life in prison.
