lol. What can I say?! I'm a film buff. Even like old Hitchcock. btw - Have you noticed that TV dramas are going back to high contrast lighting ala 1930's-50's film?

On topic, in case you missed it:

To define “Government Astronaut,” the new Act references section 50902 of Title 51, United States Code, which in turn references Section 20113 of Title 51, National and Commercial Space Programs.

The term “astronaut” is not clearly defined in any of the documents; Section 20113 stipulates that the term is anything the administration wants it to be; while Section 20147 makes it clear that not all “crewmembers” are astronauts. The term "payload specialist" does not come up on a search of either of the 2 linked Title 51 documents.

...All which has implications for everything from medical coverage to pensions. People like your mom might be set for life, but in case you didn't notice, the world is changing.

And on the lighter side, a few Hitchcock quotes:

* There is no terror in the bang, only in the anticipation of it.
* The length of a film should be directly related to the endurance of the human bladder.
* Drama is life with the dull bits cut out.

THREAD SUMMARY

As I’ve explained ad nauseum, this is NOT a political thread.* It’s about the deficits in health coverage for space-related conditions being enshrined as US space law for eternity. My threads and posts on this conspiracy date back to the mid-2000’s, and run through severl administrations.

Here’s the thing, despite TheRedneck’s repeated protestations, all space workers are NOT and will NOT be career astronauts; they do NOT and will NOT receive full benefits as career federal employees or the special long term health coverage created for “astronauts” for space-related conditions. The limits are established most clearly in Section 20113 of Title 51, National and Commercial Space Programs. As well, the commitment to “government-industry partnerships” pretty much ensures that very few space workers will benefit from any kind of long term government sponsored health care. Which is desperately needed.

The list of space-associated health conditions is long and growing - numerous ’health conditions’ and diseases are associated with the protein mis-folding that occurs in low-earth orbit space travel. And the list will keep growing as we reach to Mars and beyond. Unfortunately, there are no protections or cures yet.

Health problems in space travel result from protein mis-folding and prions. Acceleration, deceleration, microgravity, cosmic radiation and solar radiation are “environmental changes,” and cause protein mis-folding. Proteins mis-fold inside human cells, in the microbes everyone carries on and in their bodies, and in the latent and retroviruses people have inside themselves - none of which can be detected as ‘problematic’ with pre-flight testing.

Mis-folded proteins can become infectious - it’s an adaptive, evolutionary mechanism - and the process can be beneficial. But sometimes, instead of helping the body to adapt to environmental changes, infectious mis-folded proteins aka prions that develop inside the body, can cause diseases that take a long time to manifest. [More immediately obvious is what happens to the proteins in bacteria and other microbes and viruses.]

We do know that prions and other epigenetic mechanisms triggered by space travel are heritable - they can be passed on. No one even talks about the other modes of transmission or the potential for contagion. Mandatory quarantines likely filter out the most obvious threats from bacteria, fungi, viruses and etc., but as we know, there’s a whole lot more going on.

Past and current gag orders, and cuts to health and science funding pretty much ensure we’ll never know the real extent of the impacts. The Chronic Disease Pandemic might give us a hint though.

Finally, all of the 'men and women on Mars' movies will soon become reality.

Movies like Martian, Red Planet, and other Mars movies will finally become a reality.
