Russian envoy to UN, Vitaly Churkin, dies in New York - foreign ministry

MOSCOW, Feb 20 (Reuters) - Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin, has died in New York, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Monday.

The ministry gave no details on the circumstances of his death but offered condolences to his relatives and said the diplomat had died one day before his 65th birthday. (Reporting by Jack Stubbs; Editing by Gareth Jones)

Apparently he died of a heart attack... With the way things have been going in Russia lately I think an autopsy should be done to verify that it was a heart attack and not something else.

Is he the same ambassador that Mike Flynn spoke with? That would be just too coincidental

The 64-year-old was at the Russian embassy in Manhattan when he became sick with a “cardiac condition” around 9.00am this morning.

He was unconscious and needed CPR when he was rushed to New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Didn't this happen some time ago with a different Russian?

Combination of the heart attack gun and succinylcholine perhaps?

The one on was gunned down I guess on live TV (Turkey), and then right after that there was another Russian diplomatic type who died.

He was a permanent ambassador in the US, so I wonder if the autopsy will be done here in the US or if he will be send to this country of origin.

Maybe Trump ordered CIA to assassinate him. This could be the end of America Russia relations.

Not the same one. That was the Russian ambassador to the US. This was the Russian ambassador to the UN. I've seen him on TV many times.

If it was a hit it wouldn't be from Trump, it'd be the rogue elements trying desperately to restart the cold war and not give Trump a chance to build relations.

Trump ordered Pompeo to kill Churkin to prove he is not in bed with Russia. Expected. RIP.

Hoping this heart attack truly was just a natural death. Otherwise, very bad.

RIP.

What's sad is all it took was reading the headline to know he had a "heart condition". They're not even trying any more. But at least it's a better way to go than the poor sap that threw himself off the UN balcony a few years back.

Back in October, Mr. Churkin made a demarche against the UN Commissioner on Human Rights, for naming Trump a 'demagogue' during a speech he gave at the United Nations. According to the Telegraph article this is highly unusual

Demarches, or formal diplomatic communications, are used to question foreign policy but rarely centre on individuals, let alone a complaint about how the UN is treating a US politician.

The article goes on to say:

A senior UN diplomat said Mr Churkin specifically “condemned the fact that Zeid mentioned Trump”.

Just one more example of official Russian support for commrade candidate Trump.

On a tangent, do any of you remember the Russian diplomat found dead on election day inside their Manhattan consulate?
A curious read...

I would not expect any autopsy reports on Mr. Churkin that say anything other than "natural causes".
