Venezuela's government shuts down CNN

Looks like folks here in the US aren't the only ones sick off CNN. I don't believe in shutting them down though, it's better just to not watch. But in socialist counties like Venezuela, freedom of the press (I use that term lightly for CNN) is not a thing.

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela's government pulled CNN in Spanish from the nation's airwaves on Wednesday, shutting off the news channel after officials angrily criticized a report alleging the country's diplomats sold passports to members of a Middle East terror group.

The National Telecommunications Commission announced it initiated sanctions because of news stories that it considered "direct aggressions" that "threaten the peace and democratic stability" of Venezuela, the agency said in a news release.

The move comes as the new U.S. administration seems to be trying to further isolate Venezuela's embattled socialist President Nicolas Maduro. On Tuesday, President Donald Trump called on Maduro to release jailed opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, saying he should be let "out of prison immediately."

Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez said Wednesday that the CNN report and the sanctions were intimately linked and part of a foreign media-backed conspiracy to remove Maduro. The previous night, she delivered a letter to the acting head of the U.S. Embassy in Caracas formally protesting the sanctions.

The suspension of CNN in Spanish followed a steady stream of criticism aimed by Venezuelan officials at CNN since the investigative report was aired Feb. 6. CNN's story was based on a whistleblower's allegations that Venezuelan officials had been selling passports from the country's embassy in Iraq to people of Middle Eastern origin, including a few members of Hezbollah.

Sounds like what Trump and many of his supporters want to do. Suppress the freedom of the press and free speech of those that do not push favorable content.

It's sad that it came to this, but CNN has seriously made themselves into something other than journalists.

Not really. CNN is who they have always been.

What changed is that CNN became the scapegoat, the icon of "fake news", after it was discovered the Right Wing had been trolled by fake news sites looking to make a buck, by creating completely fabricated "news".

The reaction out of embarrassment was to turn the attention to the MSM and label them as fake.

CNN has been coming out hard lately with their stories on the new admin, showing Trump they will not be bullied.

CNN is crap pretending to not be crap.

CNN denounced what she did and had nothing to do with it. That was on Brazile.

I'm not saying they are not biased, but they sure are not fake news.

What I want to say is: CNN reported about something. If that something is made intently to make CNN look bad, it is not automatically CNNs error. It is a problem for their standing, but they did not make an error reporting this dossier!

In a statement, CNN said it was "completely uncomfortable with what we have learned about her interactions with the Clinton campaign while she was a CNN contributor." CNN said it "never gave Brazile access to any questions, prep material, attendee list, background information or meetings in advance of a town hall or debate."

No. CNN had nothing to do with it. Brazile tried to give Hillary a step-up in the debate, which doesn't matter a bit because each side always declares their candidate the winner and it does not have an effect on the election.

I don't believe much of what's in the dossier has been proven to be false or true, except the part where communication with foreign nationals had taken place.

So we cannot say it's fake. Even if it is, CNN did not fabricate the story. They simply reported on it. So they are not fake news either.

Nope I just quit watching CNN and now slap my label of "fake news" on them. Same as they like to throw labels on me as a white male Trump supporter. Only difference is I've watched CNN and seen the fake news with my own eyes.

They don't even know who I am. Yet they have a label for me. Funny how that works. On top of that, they have continuously pushed racist & divisive news a lot lately. Nobody wants to watch that crap, unless you buy into the crap being fed to you. So watch out, I'm the white boogeyman out to take advantage of anyone of a different color...

Are you unable to comprehend what they said? They said they are uncomfortable with what they have learned and never gave her access to questions.

If you want to split hairs with the word 'denounce', it's a waste of time. I'm sure it would not matter what they had said. You would not be satisfied.
