Good reads and absolutely no politics allowed . Getting ATS back .

I guess this is a getting ATS back attempt but being in off topic it is probably doomed to fail . The only thing i ask is no politics , none , nada . zero . I will kick things of with three good reads . The first was started in 2012 and has recently resurfaced , its very well put together and is the stuff ATS is known for . Link below .

I am in no way saying these are the best threads on ATS , but i thought they were well put together and good reads the both of them .

I'm so done with politics. I don't watch any of the cable news tripe. Nothing they say on TV ever has anything to do with my life in any meaningful way. I could care less about executive orders and other marginal outrage.

I thought the "lizard people" was just a euphemism for Jews by anti-Semites.

You would think if UFOs and aliens were real we would have definitive proof by now. Assume some alien race is studying Earthlings the way we study nature. I would imagine alien technology would be so advanced you would not have any idea you were being watch.

I've always wondered if you consider aliens having a million years more advance thinking and technology then you just might imagine a way to detect them observing us. They probably install a plastic film over computer chips that communicates over sub-space.

Whatever we do, we have fight and kill every last one of them. It's human nature.

Speaking of killing aliens, have you seen the new bipedal robots. As soon as we have robot factories making robot killing machines the human race may be exterminated by killer robots.

I agree, but consider, the whole reason all main stream entertainment exists in the first place its to draw the most people to it so they can feed us the daily politic.

News bites are sown between weather, traffic, sports, variety, etc. TV 'programming' is designed to program your mind to it.

Computers will never know that they know. They just run programs. The smarter, more lethal sure. Because people design them that way.

In that sense we already have robots building killer robots.

They are engineers and factory workers, doing rote, compartmentalized tasks to build the most lethal weapons systems the world has ever known.

IOW, life as we don't yet understand it.

I been saying "computers will never know that they know" since the early 80's.

So far, I'm proven right, time and time again.

That one doesn't scare me so much. And here's why. I am a professional software developer for over 30 years. When I was in college I took several courses on artificial intelligence. There's 2 kinds. Smart systems that learn which are very common today. But the smart systems are very limited like diagnosing images of cancer tumors. Stuff like that. The second kind is hard AI. Hard AI is indistinguishable from interacting with a human mind. Hard AI is really hard. I lost interest in hard AI after I realized all my programs were only as smart as I was.

Human beings are lot different than computers. Computers have what is call the von Neumann architecture. This means a computer has one thought call the Instruction Cycle: Fetch, Decode, Read, Execute. So computers have this inherent limitation of only ever being able to do what they are programmed to do. Some programs are self-modifying but the results are always very predictable within very well defined boundaries.

Human beings on the other hand, have the ability to stew over problems and grow solutions organically like yogurt. Our whole sense of meaning may come from quantum level connections with our reality around us. Many hard AI researchers would argue Jesus is real. So you have to be careful what you say.

Some people believe if hard AI ever happens it will happen by accident. Based on the limitations of the von Neumann architecture, I think a hard AI system will have to come from some other type of animal-machine hybrid architecture.

Besides, if a computer ever became self-aware it would probably commit suicide or at least be as depressed about existential issues as the rest of us.

At the risk of turning this into an AI thread i say this . Thirty years ago if someone had said how powerful a laptop could be , would you have believed them . A link to your favourite thread about this would be great .
