It's not like they were more stupid than some of us so-called moderns, the point is "Race" is totally a social concept, meaning it have no scientific validity and thus subject to change with time and geographical regions, I have had conversations with some AAs who were not particularly lite-skinned that visited some rural regions in Africa , and were shocked to find that they were considered or referred to as "white" based off nothing but outward expression of their Americanisms or even African Americanisms , city folks were different off-course.
