Here's a couple more, this time with proper red/green/blue filters:

Looks like ordinary sand to me, perhaps with some clay-like minerals.

Comparison Image Overlay

I did a comparison myself of the above images (uploaded to imgur above, as having problems with ATS uploads at the moment)
And found that they don't appear to be the RAW images you linked to from the news article. Infact they seem to be a competley different position. RAW image is the main image with wild-space's image overlayed and rotated and scaled into position to pixel match (as best as possible) the correct location.

This is what I found
Blue: the colour-depth is higher in the image Wildspace provided as shown by the blow-out from the Raw which indicates less colour-depth. And if you know anything about photography you will know you can't get more colourdepth from less. I have over 20+ years experience with graphics of all kinds. If you want the levels of each image, I can gladly upload them.
Red: The machinery is not in the correct position in reference to the placement of the minerals/sand/whatever it is and the dirt hole
Orange: Theres an item in the raw image that's not present in your image Wildspace, so wtf is going on?

Conclusion
The images you used are different and show a different alignment for some reason. Please provide your original sources or leave it alone.

In the Animation below you can see the mis-alignment when matched up.
The scale is also skewed, so is it lenses again this time?

2 different website sources for this article:
mars.nasa.gov...
mars.nasa.gov...

What OnePurpleMonkeyToo is about to write is not true. The image source has different colour-depth and the pixels align.

For someone with 20+ years experience with graphics you don't seem to know what happens when you stitch images together.

He gave you the original sources - those are the actual raw images, not the combined ones you got from somewhere else.

Here's a photomerge I made using the three images posted earlier - straightforward Photoshop merge, no alterations:

Tell me why this isn't a valid interpretation.

I've checked - there aren't any.

I meant the Banyan Tree looking thing next to the pool of fog or whatever it is. It has a shoreline.

Aaaaand some more amazing photos below just to stir the pot

That isn't what you said.

Why not point it out to us specifically? Maybe use the high resolution ones posted earlier.

Why not provide of the sources for your versionss?

Dude, please. For the love of all things sacred. Stop using imgur as your source. I want to find everything you want to find on mars but imgur is just not a real source. It's like linking pics to Facebook and calling it gospel.

TheAlleghenyGentleman: I had to upload to IMGUR because ATS wouldn't upload to the site. I don't want to actually give the sources away, because their servers don't have folder permissions set correctly if you get me. JPL has now fixed this on their server if you get my drift.
