"Childhood's End." Clarke, 1953. He tackles the religious aspect of visitation by benevolent beings, in the forefront of the story. Not the Alien doom take over the planet stuff.

Clarke's work of fiction "Childhood's End" certainly turned things upside down. Can you imagine the sheer terror and outcry if our first contact with a non-earth intelligence (benign as it might be) turned out to look exactly like our depiction of Satan! The religionists would have severe apoplectic fits. It doesn't bear thinking about.
