The smart thing would have been for the mother to go to the teacher and request a different book.

But no.

She went ahead and determined that NO CHILD should have the freedom to read it.

Thus, the mother is a moron.

Is she a moron because she's worried that this isn't the best choice for students in general?

Why are you afraid of her approaching the school with a question?

Do you believe that all people that have questions are morons?

Should they teach about climate change in school? Some people think they shouldn't. Should we call those people morons?

What question did she approach with? Accusing a book of being racially insensitive isn't a question, it's an accusation.

I just want to ban everything because a mind is a terrible thing.

You are living proof of this axiom.

Listen for yourself - it's right at the beginning of the meeting

She isn't hostile, or demanding. This isn't a crime - she only wondered. The school could have just said no. But, they're going to discuss it

Now somehow, the leftists in this country are burning books

:-)

You should only do it if you are forced to read a book against your will.

Having different, historical aspects might destroy you before you reach the end.

Banning the original classics with their inappropriate wordings from a era gone by - - - is the right thing to do.

You are for banning books that have words you do not like.

I really should have elaborated on that.

I was thinking grade school and I do have some Classics (Robinson Crusoe and Moby Dick) modified for young children. The Classics are actually available in many different formats.

So YES - - I definitely support modified versions of Classics for age appropriate. The original versions should not be in grade schools.

-----------------------------------------------------

At high school level - - - I'm against these books being FORCED.

IMO - - there should be options.

No one that I know reads Moby Dick, To Kill a Mockingbird or Huckleberry Finn in grade school. These are junior and high school-level books. The school in question is a high school.

And if you do not want your child to be exposed to them you can home school them, otherwise they will encounter them since they are all seminal works of American literature that still have relevance. Just because you want to raise your child like a veal does not mean everyone has to accommodate your sensibilities.

When did parents start to decide the curriculum for a teacher?

Why should one parent dictate the way a teachers class is being taught?

If a parent doesn't like what is being read to the class that child should be sent to the library and be made to work out of workbooks. I'm sure writing on ones Harvard admission paper that they never read to kill a mocking bird because mom knows best will go a long way.

This world is tough.
This world is scary.

Don't coddle children. They should be be given the tools to deal with this long, hard life so they can truly succeeded out of the mama bubble.
