Stumbled on a documentary about the Russian planes of pre WWII and post. It goes into new info (for me) about how Russia was leading the world in tech in jets, prop and swept wing designs. It also shows what a complete control freak Stalin was.

Interestingly, the soviet red air force was the only authority which granted woman as combatants, according to this:

Beyond the three official regiments, individual Soviet women sometimes served alongside airmen in otherwise all-male groups.[33] Women pilots, navigators, gunners, mechanics, armament specialists and other female ground personnel made up more than 3,000 fighting members of the VVS. Women pilots flew 24,000 sorties. From this effort came the world's only two female fighter aces: Lydia Litvyak and Katya Budanova.

Uuumm ok..Thought it was Whittle who was leading jet designs.Russia only piggybacked on what Germany had learnt..Russia did invent Blitzkreig though
