Ok, this is either going to show some of my age or at least my incompetence with technology and or socialness? (is that a word?)

I keep seeing all kinds of words or acronyms that I am not familiar with. Some I have been recognizing but still do not understand the concept or even why it is used. So a little help here for the disadvantaged, please.

Here are a few terms that I would like some help with, in explanation, definition, the why & how, etc... :

Meme

SJW

emoticons (?)

emoti

trolls (though I had asked that one somewhere else as well)

I am sure there are plenty of others, so I may add to the list . . . but my brain just dropped a load so I'm all blank right now.

Therefore, please add to the list and give other examples of 'useless' terms and the reasons they're actually useful.

Meme : An image or idea that quickly transmits itself via recognition and repetition.

SJW : A person who hyperinflates a social issue to the point of sheer absurdity

Emoticons : the digital smiley face or other small image that conveys an emotion, object or action

Emoti : Shorthand variant of Emoticon

Trolls : People who antagonize discussion forums or comments sections with nothing relevant to contribute with the hope of luring others into a one on one argument of their own design.

ok, thanks for definitions, but what are the reasons? why do they exist at all? I see no function in most of them.

And I'm sure there are others I will run into as well.

Here ya go:

www.urbandictionary.com...

As to the 'why' - that is self evident. The culture is always evolving and adapting now to the influx of technology.

well at least you didn't turn it into an acronym which strangely would be fitting.

Very good. Where to find what younger generations are saying. Its in code mostly, acronyms usually, because newer generations use newer devices that don't have keyboards and its harder to imbue meaning when you're all thumbs.

wow, my grandpa passed away at your age. it must be awesome to be able to say "I am one full century old" . Maybe with new technology, you can add another century??

why not just use Google?

You are reading, come across a term you don't know....open another tab and Google it. You'd be surprised how much knowing the words in an article helps you understand the article.

because I thought I could get some intelligent reasoning here. You know, some logic to explain the illogical. Maybe, its just too much to hope for.

Oddly, it's starting to feel routine... what's weird is thinking someone was born in the year 2000 or something. How is that even possible???

I wasn't responding sarcastically.

That's how i read. I open a new tab and search things out. It can take a week to read some articles, as I run through cross references, etc.

And what I learn along the way ends up blowing my mind.

I didn't think you were.

I was simply responding truthfully, because I honestly don't get most people these days.
