Let's get the obvious out of the way first, The Beatles have to top the list, generally speaking.

For me personally, I have often wondered what The Police would have done after their album Synchronicity. That's my top choice.

The Beatles didn't break up too soon. 10 years of recording was a pretty long career in those days. Don't forget they played together a lot before their first record.

Yeah, sadly, I want to say Led Zep should have carried on without Bonzo instead of packing it in. I say that as one of the biggest fans of the legendary drummer.

The fact that The Who ran out of steam had more to do with Pete's substance abuse problems, not the loss of Moon.

I also wish The Cars didn't stop recording after only about 6 years. Their reunion album was epic though, so I am happy with that.

Pixies.

5 amazing albums followed by 12 years of nothing. I can't say I'm feeling the new stuff either.

Let's throw in The White Stripes too

I know David Eugene Edwards went on with Wovenhand, but, I sure do wish he would have did a few more as 16 Horsepower.

Canned Heat's great early lineup didn't last long:

Free barely lasted 3 years:

I know, it was tragic. In my timeline Keith choked on his own vomit in 1966 and then Mick choked on Keith's vomit in 1968.

One of the few times it was a plus that I got Mandela Effected over to this timeline.

Is that the one where all the drummers died in bizarre gardening accidents (except for the last one who spontaneously combusted).

... and how do they know it was Keith's vomit? They can't, like, dust for vomit, you know.

You don't know what it's like if you have never collaborated with other artists on a project.
It is healthy for friendships to limit the run.
It sucks when you try to keep it going too long and everybody goes stale and starts hating each other.

I can think of way more bands that should've broken up a long time before they did (if they're not still around to this day).

Like, for instance...

The Rolling Stones.

Aerosmith (well, they kinda did for a while, and should've stayed that way)
Metallica
AC/DC
Pearl Jam
Genesis
Radiohead
Ozzy (FFS)

Lots more. But dinner beckons...

ETA: The pop star ego knows nothing of bowing out gracefully.
