The drive-in at your local McDonald's could rank up there with the neighborhood bar when it comes to sending dangerous drivers back out on the road, at least according to a trio of New Jersey lawmakers, and they want to do something about it.

They're asking colleagues to pass a new bill that would, among other things, bar motorists from sipping on a cup of coffee or nibbling on a burger while behind the wheel. A first-time offense can carry up to $400 in fines, something that jumps to as much as $800 for a third offense — plus a 90-day license suspension and points.

I don't agree with the law either, but I will say your response seems a bit excessive.

I love my freedom as much as the next man, but you won't see me hanging anyone because they told me I can't eat or drink in my car. I'd maybe start by... I dunno... voting for some other candidates this November that feel that the law is ridiculous and must be repealed.

Yeah, that seems to be a much better response to this particular threat against liberty.

Unless you have a Tesla self drive the driver of a vehicle should only be thinking about driving , not drinking coffee , eating breakfast or reading the morning paper.
Drink coffee before or after the journey not during , if not for your own safety then for the others you share the road with.

It's a commonsense move.

Soon they'll just ban radios in cars.

I've been drinking a cup of coffee on my way to work every morning since the 70s. They can have my coffee when they pry it... you know the deal.

Speaking of seatbelt laws you now have to seatbelt your dogs when you put them in the car here in New Jersey.

They just were not clear enough and I did not realize the seatbelt had to be in the car.

Some people drive much better while drinking coffee than others who don't.

Sipping on some coffee (or a soft drink or a bottle of water) shouldn't be a big deal, but trying to eat a meal while driving is just asking for trouble. It's almost as bad as texting while driving, in my opinion.

If someone causes an accident because they were trying to eat a meal while they were supposed to be paying attention to the road, they should be fined big bucks AND have their license removed.

Jesus, you yanks have it easy. In the UK if your spotted driving with only one hand on the wheel you will be prosecuted for driving without due care and attention. So eating, drinking, smoking or any other thing that needs you to take a hand off the wheel will see you in court.

You're right, radios can't spill in your lap. But they can make you sing and I know plenty of people that close their eyes when they sing.

This is just another attempt at feel good legislation that won't solve any problems. I'm tired of this crap.
