Because it carries higher penalties and the US loves to give disproportionate punishments for crimes, it has little to nothing to do with their mental state and everything to do with it being a publicly acceptable way to be tough on crime.

To Texans . . . and many of the rest of us

such a move is EXCEEDINGLY SENSIBLE and NOT doing so would be irrational to an extreme.

And given Jihadi's and crazies' preferences for "gun free zones"

it seems to me that the logic is with us Texans.
