Thought I'd share this with you folks, just like Queen's Brian May.

Belvedere, CA — Heavy metal guitarist and Metallica lead singer James Hetfield announced on his personal Facebook page that he had just finished defending his PhD dissertation at California Institute of Technology in Pasadena (CalTech), CA. Mr. Hetfield, or Dr. Hetfield as he prefers now, had been secretly attending the esteemed university off and on for the last 12 years, often taking courses via correspondence.

If you read the comments section of the article you linked, it says that the story is a satirical piece and has no basis in truth.

Can you log into FB and grab a screenshot of his announcement he apparently made?

Yeah, couldn't find a confirmation from a reputable site. I don't have an FB account... anyways his (supposedly) dissertation about black holes could be from his personal experience with dealing with Lars... oh, that was a different hole.

Sorry folks, my bad, too excited to share when I read the article. You can take back the stars and flags now and report me to the mods.

Good for him. He's still a corporate Alternica sellout; sue his fans. When they gonna release "The Unforgiven 3"?

Please do not sue us. Here’s why. The First Amendment protects parody and satire as a form of free speech and expression. The Nevada County Scooper uses invented names in all of its stories, except in cases where public figures are being satirized. Any other use of real names is accidental and coincidental. The Nevada County Scooper is not intended for readers under 18 years of age or people that don’t have a maturity level of at least 18 years of age.

I was being sarcastic. They didn't cash in enough on "part 1" & "part 2" they needed to make another? They should go for 13 like Friday the 13th!

There has never been a "metal" band that wasn't more ALL about the money. Them selling out their brand to corporate radio music model, suing their fans, and doing 'sequels' to their radio hits should prove there's never been any rock band that was more about the money.

Oh, I forgot, you're all into corporate sellouts, so no point in having this discussion

Anyways, so does he write songs about astrophysics? I haven't much heard they last several albums. Just all the old stuff, and then all the stuff they play ad nauseum on the radio EVERY hour (which I try not to ever listen to that medium in general).

The music still kicks ass though, but they were naive to think fighting Napster would succeed in stopping piracy. I think they may have actually helped it spread earlier due to the exposure and publicity at the time.

I've grown to not be a fan much of generally any music with lyrics (SONGS). Yet love MUSIC more than most people; real exotic stuff I know about and enjoy.

I used to love Metallica, as a teen, before they became Alternica.

The reason I dont like songs with lyrics (especially if I can understand them) is based entirely on my contention that songs are mind control. The radio only plays songs with specifically laid out (three times per song like how there are three sets of three commercials when watching tv shows, per half hour) chorus/"hooks" for the reason I argue: to take over your subconscious. Go play a song right now and tell me that it singing inside your head doesn't take take over your mind in very real ways (drowning out your own thoughts). Really get the song "stuck in your head"!

Now this wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, except the agenda the corporate radio model people push, which can be found in most every song on the radio. With rap its bling bling for instance (making rabid consumers of the fans the agenda there). Radio Rock is generally about just stuff that has no meaning, often with plenty of despair and such, sometimes anger. Anger can be a good thing; or STRENGTH that is (such as Pantera). As it should have been expected: "Emo" came out (EMOtional) all fueled by MTV, which now repackaged rock into mentally weak commercialism ("cut myself if my Emo wardrobe isn't up to my expectations"). Argh, I'm digressing.

So look at the lyrics to Fade To Black:

Life, it seems, will fade away
Drifting further every day
Getting lost within myself
Nothing matters, no one else

I have lost the will to live
Simply nothing more to give
There is nothing more for me
Need the end to set me free

Things not what they used to be
Missing one inside of me
Deathly lost, this can't be real
Cannot stand this hell I feel

Emptiness is filling me
To the point of agony
Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he's gone

No one but me can save myself, but it's too late
Now I can't think, think why I should even try

Yesterday seems as though it never existed
Death greets me warm, now I will just say goodbye

No wonder 'we' all delt with so much depression as kids playing that song and others like it over and over. The irony that today, after over a decade of avoiding radio music, and such, I'm almost quite literally immune to things like Depression.

But if James were to start making intelligent songs (i.e. astrophysics), that could actually be positive / it would be actual progress (it's just too bad the corporate overlords wont likely play them on the radio).

Yea but as long as you know the subliminal messages of the songs, you can negate its effect. I think this song applies perfectly to what you mean

some musicians know exactly where you coming from, and try to get the message out.

Alright, to play nice, here goes some ACTUAL music (free of lyrics):

Look at that, after ending making new instrumental tunes post-Black album (which furthers my general contention above), they actually did go make a new one for "Death Metallic".

Perhaps a nice outer space themed video actually would go good with their new instrumental tune there
