They don't always suicide people. Sometimes they just lock up the patent.

thats the bloody stumbling block for the inventors.
however there are more than one ways to block a patent, bloody inconvenient

For a change I wish some altruistic son of a gun at the research table would just open source their breakthrough tech and let the rest of the world have a crack at it. I just want to click on the link, see some schematics and a whitepaper, then go to Home Hardware and start tinkering in the garage.

I know, return on investments, time, patents , I.P. blah blah blah, but we're talking about the betterment of humanity and perhaps the very survival of our civilization and species right? This will just disappear into the mists of our collective ADD like every other "breakthrough".
