Economics is definitely one cause, but the real problem is that a large number of conservatives in this country want to live in the 19th century wild west, while liberals want to live in the 21st century brave new world.

These two worldviews are completely incompatible, and the sad thing is that we really didn't have this problem until right-wing radio came on the scene. They have spent 25 years convincing millions of people that educated and qualified people are bad and society should be run by morons so look at the results.

So the reason that there is such a divide is because people won't agree with you.

Thanks very much. Another few sayings...worded slightly different...come to mind here thats a pertinent reflection too...

"Those who don't know history...are doomed to repeat it" - Edmund Burke

"The past always has a way of returning. Those who don't learn, or can't remember it, are doomed to repeat it.

The problem with responding to your post is that if I respond to your post I have to address the partisan nature of it which will work to further the divide and I don't want that.

Divided you stand, and yet united you will fall.

The tone of political debate counts for a lot than many people ever realised ever since it went down in the toilet in the USA and in Australia. If the level of Partisan of debate become toxic no real economic or other kinds of policy reforms become possible. In Australia political instability and a toxic political scene is preventing the economy from recovering after the mining boom ended.

By the design of the Foundering Fathers the US system of government is designed to keep a single political party from having a parliamentary style majority of seats. The cold hard reality Ted Cruz and his followers won't admit to is how bridges must be build sometimes when different political parties control the Senate , House of Representatives and or the Presidency.
