Shooting heard in Ankara, military jets & helicopters flying over city

Stories have just started to break out all over social media of Tanks on the street in the Capital of Turkey and of the Military rounding up senior Police officials.

Shooting is being reported in the Turkish capital, Ankara, with military jets and helicopters seen in the sky above the city. According to reports on Twitter, the authorities have closed the two Bosporus bridges in Istanbul, where military jets have also been spotted flying.

Still very early days but this is starting to look like a coup taking place against the Islamist President Erdogan

Finally starting to appear on the mainstream media

Gunshots were heard in the Turkish capital of Ankara on Friday, a Reuters witness said, as military jets and helicopters were seen flying overhead. Reuters witnesses in Istanbul, Turkey's biggest city, also spotted helicopters overhead. Broadcaster NTV reported that both of Istanbul's bridges across the Bosphorus, the strait separating the European and Asian sides of the city, had been closed to traffic. It was not immediately clear if the events were related.

They cracked down on social media last year after the head of intelligence offered to kill Turkish special forces in a false flag operation, and it was broadcast on YouTube. Maybe this is the eventual reckoning from that incident?

No major news media story. But a quick google search shows: Twitter, Facebook and YouTube were all blocked at 10:50 PM (local?). The other half of the page says, "Prime minister on TV apparently said "this is an insurgency". So coup, at least attempt. Unresolved" from Twitter user.

Twitter Facebook and Youtube within Turkey have just been blocked by the Government. Standard practice when they want to avoid the people rising against them.

Good for them to get that radical idiot out... if people have enough this happens!

This is bad news. I saw that they were closing a couple of bridges in Istanbul just before the reports of gunfire in Ankara. I figured another attack or something, but this looks like it could be a boiling point in Turkey. Let's hope not. That area doesn't need one more thing at the moment.

I disagree. Removing Erdogan from office may be the best possible scenario for that country. Now maybe they'll stop assisting ISIS.
