Not guilty of plagiarism that is.

The case should never have been bought to court in the first place. It was stated by their defence team that the chord progression they where accused of nicking had been in use for more than 300 years.

Good result

It may be the right chord progression.... As nothing in the creation of sound is truly new any longer....

But, they *did* blatantly steal the entire song in question.

The court decided otherwise.

Excellent news! I'm happy for them, the case presented by the Spirit lawyers was so weak, I don't know how they even thought it a good idea to begin with.
Basically claiming ownership of a chord progression.
A win for artists everywhere really. .

Long live the Zepp

And the courts are always correct...I'm sure no one has ever been wrongfully accused of a crime...

Sensible decision , well done the jury.
There are similarity's in all music that doesn't equal plagiarism.

Funny just this moment I was stumbling thru Stairway on my Classical Guitar.

I think the judgement is proper.

It is a common chord progression, but this is not the first time Jimmy Page has been accused of this. Not really sure either way.

Nah!

The intro starts off as the same arpeggio, but Spirit's keeps descending, where Led's cycles back up on the second bar.

The rev-up towards the end, then back down to just a vocal? And the solo.... IMHO its just different

The chord structure is common place

Jimmy has been on so many recordings I would have accused them of stealing his riffs... probably would've won!

Of course Zep didn't plagiarize somebody else's work. Glad to see the court feels the same way!

I didn't even know this was before a court. What a joke.

And they stole, I mean bought the stairway to heaven.

Possibly the greatest rock band ever to grace the charts and you want to claim something they did was not theirs?

Mkaaaay…

It looks pretty cut and dry when you see the sheet music, IMO

I got only one thing to say (again).

Louie, Louie-The Kingsmen
Hang on Sloopy-McCoys
La Bamba-Ritchie Valens
Stay-Four Seasons

Just 4 hits with the same chord progression. You cant copyright a chord progression. Only a series of exact notes of a MELODY line.

The descending CHORDS cant be copyrighted. IF the MELODY line was close to exact, that could have been.

Good.

Zepp IS guilty. Guilty of being AWESOME.
Though Stairway isn't even in my top 10 Zepp tunes.

Nope. The other song KEPT descending, where Zeps went to another chord (D major). Spirits kept descending...past...and wnet to another refrain than Zep.

Mine neither… In no particular order:

Don't trip. I meant them, not you. The music makes the song, like only Zep can make it. Nobody can take that from them.

In '68 I got an AM/FM radio for Christmas. Good present at the time. We lived in the middle of nowhere, northern Ontario. Radio wave travel though. This song changed my young life(about 7):

Zepp isn't my fav band but they certainly lead me to the music.
