I covered this last year. China has appalling animal welfare standards. In fact, there are none. The repulsive way the Chinese treat all animals is extended to these dogs. Unfortunately, we cannot even have the consolation that dogs butchered for the Chinese are treated with some dignity. They are not.

Tourists beware of what you eat.

This is absolutely true. Those of you stating that it's "just part of their culture" are dead wrong. That's why there are millions of CHINESE protesting this practice. They TORTURE the dogs and it goes FAR BEYOND anything here in the west. And yes, I have been to veal farms, chicken farms, etc.

There, dogs are skinned alive, boiled alive, electrocuted, slowly beaten, even CRUCIFIED. There are videos on youtube if you have the stomach for it. It's the worst thing I've ever seen. It must be stopped.

We slaughter animals in the west. They TORTURE dogs in Asia. Call me a racist if you must, but their practices are unconscionable. And again, many Asians are waking up to their own country's sick practices and protesting.

Except for the dog meat industry(in Yulin) has few to none regulation standards if one wants to compare to other heavily regulated meat industries. All the while the US factory farms don't abide much to the law.

Your neighbors eat dogs? I'm concerned here. Are you in the US? That is animal cruelty here as well as many other Western Nations.

This festival in question is not even an ancient cultural tradition to Yulin as it's a more recently implemented commercial festival to welcome in health during the summer. Overall, It's similar to Holiday commercialism to bring in revenue but it not without risk to the animals and even health hazards of the meat due to poor regulation.

It's not imposing to protest against it, it is about compassion and that's why people are railing against this. Not all of them were raised to be meat, that is a lie set forth by the meat sellers. Many of these dogs were once pets bought, stolen and plucked from the streets when missing or abandoned.

Excellent points. This thread needs bumped because it's happening again.

This is not a dog meat festival. It's a DOG TORTURE FESTIVAL.

Days before the "festival" the dogs legs are broken so they can't escape. They are kicked, tossed, and thrown, yelping all the while. They have wires around their snouts, but they still whimper and cry and they are burned while fully conscious, brutally beaten, left to slowly bleed, and tortured in the most horrific ways imaginable.

This has nothing to do with culture. This festival was started in 2012. Let them eat dog, but protest this torture. The world should never turn a blind eye to cruelty on this scale. Look up the videos if you have the stomach for it. It is horrific. Worse, the attendees revel in the animals' suffering.

This "festival" is a tribute to Satan and his demons, and everyone who condones it is complicit.

US it is illegal to offer dog meat for sale commercially, but it is perfectly legal for someone to raise them for the purpose of their own household consuming them in every US state except California, Georgia, Hawaii, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. No, it isn't automatically "animal cruelty" per US laws. The commercial processing and sale of the meat is federally illegal because of health concerns, not because of western ideologies.

I've had dog (didn't know it was dog at the time, and yeah, it was from a commercially licensed business in the USA). It wasn't bad. It had no distinguishing taste, only a very stringy texture due to the longer muscle fibers in canines. It isn't something I'd ever see myself going out of my way to have again, but meat is meat. I feel the same about whales... some species such as the Minke whale are far from threatened, so harvesting discretely from their population numbers makes logical sense to me.

Asia eat cats and dogs because that's what they eat
Tell that to the 11 million Chinese who disagree with your theory, as PETS are stolen to ensure this Festival has enough dogs to eat. We are talking about CHINA, and only China in this OP not the world, so please stay on topic.

8 one thousandths of their population? That's the equivalent of 2.6 Million Americans agreeing with something. Holy crap, 12 million Americans believe in the reptillian overlord theory. 11 Million Chinese is a statistically insignificant number of Chinese.
