Then find a candidate that will nuke that dysfunctional paradigm. Or run on that platform yourself. But don't settle. It's the settling that has given us the current system.

You see the problem then.
To expand on the bus analogy,
We're all in the bus. It is falling off a cliff. Hillary wants blue cup holders. Trump wants red. some guy sitting next to me is shouting out for green cup holders.
I say, "But we're falling off a cliff, shouldn't we do something about that?"
And everyone says, "Shut up! We're talking cup holders!"
And people wonder why I laugh. It is a tragic comedy of epic proportions.
I don't see how all of these so-called "enlightened" ones don't see this. You nailed it.

I like your OP, I've been saying this for years.
However the incessant screaming and promises of "BUT THIS TIME, IT'LL BE DIFFERENT," take precedence over caution and carefulness.
Americans are a funny bunch. I'm told regularly by Republicans that Obummer is trying to take their guns using the federal government, and then they turn and tell me to vote for Trump because he is going to magically wave a wand and fix everything.
I'm told by Democrats that "the election is rigged in Hillary's favor!," and then they tell me to vote for Bernie Sanders because he's going to "shake things up in D.C.!"
But I thought the elections were rigged? And I thought the big-bad gubment was coming for you guns?
Now suddenly we're all vehement supporters of the government, because the current candidates tell us that they're "different, outsiders, not bought and paid for, etc etc"?
Because that's how I see it, and it's maddening.
Every four years Americans do this #.
"But this time, it'll be different! My guy is going to make America great again!"
Sure it will, Princess. You keep on believing the rampant lies and empty promises of the authoritarian-esque candidates that are currently running.
In another four and a half years, this song and dance will be repeated. It always is. Americans blame "crooked politicans," yet the continuously cast their unfettered support through voting time and time again. They keep on voting the crooked politicians in, and let's be honest everyone: this election cycle is nothing new, nothing different.
Only in hindsight will this be realized.
