Can we all agree right now that this is the FIRST time Ali has died ?

Or did somebody already start another Mandela Effect thread about it?

I agree it is the first time. I have no idea why you are trying to turn it into a ME bashing thread though. This thread is abiout the death of a person that many remember as part of their childhoods. Try to stay on topic.

When I was 16, Muhammad Ali visited our town in Michigan, where he had a training camp. I reached out to shake his hand. Ali responded by saying that he didn't like me because I looked like a younger George Foreman. I'm glad he was smiling/joking when he said that! (At 16, you're emotionally vunerable to insults)

One of my Favorite quotes by the champ . In fact i used it in my ATS intro

“I’ve wrestled with alligators,

I’ve tussled with a whale.

I done handcuffed lightning

And throw thunder in jail.

You know I’m bad.

just last week, I murdered a rock,

Injured a stone, Hospitalized a brick.

I’m so mean, I make medicine sick.”

Mohammed Ali was very similar to how Donald Trump is today.

1. Mohammed Ali was one of the best at what he did for a living.
2. He was "larger than life" in a showbizzy / flamboyant way.
3. He loved to "Trash Talk" his opponents.
4. Mohammed Ali was very issue-driven. He didn't just have feelings about what the country needed...he spoke and acted on those feelings and beliefs.

There's more, but those are the main similarities, IMO. No wonder America believes in Donald Trump so passionately!

I was pretty grossed out by the OP doing just that, and the post you're responding to as well.

-----

Let's celebrate the guys life and share some videos, quotes and if you're older tell us what it was like watching those fights live.

He was my favorite athlete, though not for his fights. I respected 1000% his effort in the Civil Rights Movement and in Africa. And unlike many people, he put his money where his mouth was. And his countless interviews and soundclips about civil rights and equality are both priceless and still ripe with controversy. I can only imagine the impact they had when he was the most famous athlete on the planet and the nation was still integrating .

He, brother Malcolm, and brother Patrice Lumumba are 3 of the men I respect the most. Sad to see him go, but proud of what he stood for.

When I was a kid I knew nothing about Ali being in politics and civil rights etc........ learned all that much later in life.

Just watching him back then you knew he was something special, he was so much a hero to me, I even cried when Leon Spinks defeated him lol.... That's back when cable just got started, me and my dad had to listen to that fight on the damn radio.... after all the years watching boxing on tv!

Ali and Howard Cosell was like Batman and Robin to me.... thus I had a short stent in golden gloves.

2016 so far has been a rough year in terms of losing great ones. Maybe its just my age but it sure seems that the last several years have been particularly harsh in terms of high profile people dying.

I was startled when I saw the news that Ali had passed. We all knew it was coming, but as a previous poster indicated, it was still heartbreaking to hear the news.

When I was a child, not everyone in my family circle viewed "Cassius Clay" in a very favorable light. In fact, if I recall correctly, most of the time they were on the side of whoever was fighting against Ali.

I suppose my rural African-American relatives and neighbors didn't like his "loud mouth." And they certainly didn't appreciate the reasons for changing his name.

But they certainly helped make him rich by paying to see him fight. They would travel over an hour to the local Colosseum to watch the fight on the big screen. They were transmitting from the sight venue using satellites. Pretty high-tech for the time.

As I recall, I wasn't too interested in Boxing at the time, so my attitude toward Mohammed Ali simply mirrored my elders. It wasn't until I got a little older did I understand more about his style and finesse; and the fact that he was much more intelligent than I was taught.

Eventually I came to respect his accomplishments a great deal. In the last few years it has always lightened my heart when I saw Ali appear on a show, or in a commercial.

R.I.P to "The Greatest"
