Oberlin Students Want to Abolish Midterms And Any Grades Below C

Snowflake Alert!

Well, okay.
In a nutshell...students at Oberlin College are worried that academics are getting in the way of their activism.

Simple solution: Start a petition to get rid of those pesky tests...and because their grades have been suffering (what with all the protesting, travelling to protests and getting arrested and all)...they would really prefer to receive no grades lower than a 'C'.

The article doesn't mention if the school is taking these demands seriously...but given recent similar campus stories...it's just possible that what Snowflakes want...Snowflakes will always get.

Is this a case of where the lunatics are officially running the asylum?

Students at Oberlin College are asking the school to put academics on the back burner so they can better turn their attention to activism.

More than 1,300 students at the Midwestern liberal arts college have now signed a petition asking that the college get rid of any grade below a C for the semester, and some students are requesting alternatives to the standard written midterm examination, such as a conversation with a professor in lieu of an essay.

The students say that between their activism work and their heavy course load, finding success within the usual grading parameters is increasingly difficult. "A lot of us worked alongside community members in Cleveland who were protesting," Megan Bautista, a co-liaison in Oberlin's student government, said, referring to the protests surrounding the shooting death of 12-year-old Tamir Rice by a police officer in 2014. "But we needed to organize on campus as well — it wasn't sustainable to keep driving 40 minutes away. A lot of us started suffering academically."

The student activists' request doesn't come without precedence: In the 1970s, Oberlin adjusted its grading to accommodate student activists protesting the Vietnam War and the Kent State shootings, The New Yorker reports.

But current students contend that same luxury was not granted to them even though the recent Rice protests were over a police shooting that took place just 30 miles east of campus.

"You know, we're paying for a service. We're paying for our attendance here. We need to be able to get what we need in a way that we can actually consume it," student Zakiya Acey told The New Yorker.

"Because I'm dealing with having been arrested on campus, or having to deal with the things that my family are going through because of larger systems — having to deal with all of that, I can't produce the work that they want me to do. But I understand the material, and I can give it to you in different ways."

Excellent idea.

Better yet, let's just issue everyone a PhD in the field of their choice.

Everyone gets to be Dr. Soandso.

Are these kids effing kidding me?

Put down the bullhorn and do your homework junior.

Oberlin is probably ahead of the curve...this appears to be the natural evolution of universities. Report cards will eventually be replaced by rap sheets listing arrests for civil disobedience.

This is retarded! I have to hire 7 new technicians, how am I to trust that the people I hire know the difference between a screwdriver and an oscilloscope if there are no standards? I know people hate to hear it, but we are on the road to Idiocracy. To add, look at the literacy rates. Just because you can have a blog and pretend you're a reporter doesn't mean you know how to construct sentences, that make ef'ing sense. To make matters worse these tools are activists. If they can't be responsible in school, how are they going to be responsible with an employer?

School is to learn skills and a trade.

If you want to be useless and broke you can do that for basically free.

What a bunch of useless idiots.

This just encourages dumb people to think they're smart when the reality is that they are not.

That's pretty ballsy and I bet just about any college kid would want this because mid terms suck and a conversation is so much better.

But they can't have it both ways if activism is getting the way, college is college and you can't ask it to stop its practice because you can't find the time. I guess these college kids don't live in dorms? Because since when don't kids living on campus not have free time? But, if they have a full time job then I understand they don't have any time to spare but it is what it is, deal.

Every time I think I've heard it get as dumb as it possibly can, the bar keeps getting pushed lower.

The stupidity is astounding, the selfishness absurd.

What happens when these sjws enter the real world? They're probably expecting PTO for 'activism' and mandatory trigger warnings.

Next they'll demand top paying jobs when they "graduate" from their schools.

This proves that activism is a platform to make self-seeking demands. It's all a costume for people who seek power.

Where was this when I was in school ? Damn . We actually had to earn our marks. Oh, wait , that was aeons ago.

That's fine if they want the lowest available grade to be a "C". The school will simply change their scale and definitions to make "B-" and above, what's needed for a passing grade.
